Dakar is probably one of the most modern and beautiful cities I've seen in Africa. I've seen many youtubers travel to Nairobi, Kigali, Johannesburg, Addis Abeba, Dar Essalam, Accra, Lagos etc and they all look kinda dirty and chaotic. Dakar in fact reminds me of the city of Salvador in Brazil that i've visited. But Dakar feels safer whereas in Salvador you have to be on your toes.

It all adds to the adventure though 😀 Senegalese are great and many of them have tough lives, living on very little, but they still maintain a great attitude to life. 5:47 If I could, I would help set Kenna up with an online shop , she could make good money selling that stuff online. Maybe it won't fetch as high of a price as pity peddling the merch to tourists but would reach more people across the world. I admit I don't really know what the tech situation is like in Senegal, how tough is it to get their hands on a laptop for the business. Having listened to Magget wade interview on Lex friedman podcast impressed me though which is why I check out this video to see if I can find out more. Would you be as safe walking in Dakar without a guide? Information about crime rates is a bit sketchy and most of it in french.

Online stores really are a great thing but I guess there's the logistical issue of shipping all over the world as I'm guessing over 90% of their customers are tourists. Most people I saw had smart phones but I'm unsure how many have laptops. I briefly walked through Dakar without the guide (the shots in the morning before breakfast and also in the evening to pick up dinner were without a guide). I felt safe enough but these were only for short periods. I've read that the touristic areas are a little more sketchy but the main concern is really pick-pockets. Dakar certainly didn't feel to me any less safe than European cities. I hope this helps!

We can never say for sure if one will be safe walking around nowhere in the world. But, here in Dakar, i have seen a a lot of white people, men, women, young girls, teen boys, old man everything, probably french people lol... Walking around alone, or in groups and they seem very confident about their safety lol. I lived in Libreville in Gabon before, and there ive almost NEVER seen a white person walking around like that. So yeah, it doesnt mean that it's safe, but i guess it doesnt mean that it is unsafe either.

Senegal's sorrows are greater than its joys (and how much greater they are) you should talk about!! the country has slavery until today, and women are practically all reduced and forced to be sex slaves of men, but many do not want to talk about this subject and they should, the neighboring country to Mauritania, slavery until today is seen as normality, in full 21st century and many don't know it!
@HamedSwan Жыл бұрын
Senegal is a big country. And as every country, yes it has a lot of downs. But she went to DAKAR. And i refuse, to let you say what you said about women being men sex slaves here, it's non sense. You dont know what you're talking about. Maybe inside the country, it's possible. But again, in Dakar, Saint Louis, the big cities... it's not like that. Women are respected, well treated, they just leave their life dude, some are even empowered and stuff XD. I dont know what you can do to change your wrong view about the country lol, maybe watch some "MARODI TV" shows ? Now i dont know why you mention Mauritania lol, it's not because two countries are close that they have the same realities but okay.

How common is alcohol? I know its legal, but most do not drink at all? Is it taboo?
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
I found alcohol was served in most places, despite the fact that most of the population is Muslim. It's fine to drink alcohol but I've heard that acting in a drunk way is seen as offensive.

Wow, the baked goods look so amazing! In the U.S., the bread and pastries are not very good. Local markets are always adventures all on their own. The sights and sounds and don't forget the smells. I think you got a great deal on the local goods. I try not to haggle at very poor countries when the money is going directly to the local person who really needs the money. When April and I were in Guatemala, I did not really haggle unless someone was trying to take advantage of us. Then we usually bought the goods from a different vendor anyway. That is so sad about the 20,000,000 slaves. People are so cruel. The sand art is very cool. April would love to try the donuts. Your guide was so knowledgeable. It is so sad that there is so much trash on the beach that will wash into the ocean. How was the wrap?
@EllaMcKendrick2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I really love local markets - they're overwhelming (I get sensory overload quite easily) but mesmerising! That makes me feel better to hear that you also don't haggle. Guides online are always like "haggle! Never pay over the odds" but the one time I actually tried to barter hard (it was in Sri Lanka), I felt so awful about it. Unfortunately, there's like no infrastructure in place for waste disposal so people have limited options on what to do with it which is really sad. However, in this instance I believe it's the visitors who leave trash on the island which is really irritating. The wrap was delicious!

What are advantages and drawback to be surrounded by a guide? Amazing point of view u offered ^^
@EllaMcKendrick Жыл бұрын
There were many advantages! First of all, my French is limited so I would have struggled to communicate with a lot of people. Secondly, he was helpful at advising on local customs. He also knew everyone which made me feel very safe. Finally, his recommendations were great! I didn't really notice any drawback. He was very flexible with the itinerary and when I got tired, he was happy to cut the day short. I hope this helps!
