I grew up in a village. A village called Kabayan.
We often gathered together in ritual and celebration. I didn’t always understand what was happening, but sitting beside the elders, listening to them chant and witnessing them partake in their roles as part of these rituals and celebrations, always felt right inside my heart.
This song takes me back to those times.
I am grateful to be able to share a part of me, through a song that was composed by people of my village. Kalchang were the first group in my village that I ever shared my music with. It’s an honor to have their blessing to share this song.
This song expresses everything about my home, the land I grew up in. It is so dear to me, and always takes me back to my village, to this place of gathering.
In Ibaloi, Adibay means to gather and call upon Kabunyan (The great spirit).
We gather, we dance, we celebrate.
Apo (elders) lead prayer, ‘Owag’ is the calling and incantation, of calling in the spirit and the people.
I don’t often share much about my native side, because I want it to remain sacred. Protecting this sacred side of my village, the rituals and ceremonies that we do, is important.
Remembering is also important. This song is my remembering.
It’s also an acknowledgement to the people that have left the village for greener pastures, to help the village back home. It helps when I’m missing my family. And I hope it does the same thing for others, listening to or singing this song amidst their days. Reminding them of home.
This is me honoring who I am, my people
This is me honoring how I was raised by the village
Honoring that no matter where I go, I will always be remembering myself Remembering my ancestors,
My grandmother, grandfather
The mountains,
The rivers,
The land,
The people,
Everything,
Everything that shaped me
