I think it's mostly just that the arcade era is over. Obvious answer but yeah, back in the day Japan was the scene where the games were played constantly, 100x more than anywhere else in the world. Even with online available, they would have gotten the game first and grinded for a year+ before the rest of the world had a shot. In the US, New York, Cali and maybe Texas were essentially mini-Japans where you had your second best shot of grinding to be good. Now that online is so good and arcades are going away/gone, the whole world can be "Japan" now. Legacy skill has been carrying for a long time, but these NEW games tend to move away from that too. As for what Japan still has? Probably Granblue lol, I don't think we're taking that. And it's closer than ever, but I think they still got us in +R. Doable though because +Rollback is a giant ass arcade that never closes, like I said

Something was really off about evo japan this year, the award ceremonies were poorly directed, in all instances the player who came first had no idea when to come forward to celebrate their victory on stage on every game and receive their check and eyedrops carepackage. It was awkward and anticlimactic as hell 😂

Japan got nerfed when modern fighting games started catering to the lowest common denominator. Input buffers, simplified controls (hell, simplified everything), RPS-heavy gameplay and slower than ever. Having trouble counter-hit confirming? How about if we freeze the action to a crawl and have the word *COUNTER* take up half the screen?

To me, japan has never being the dominating fighting game country as much as people say, if anything, I think they where kind of the best on slower pace games like previous versions of street fighter and stuff like vampire saviour, and even calling stuff like niche fighters like og melty blood they where kind of the best because those games where only played in japan, and the people that play outside of japan, because of the era, just didnt have the means to get on japan level due to having a small scene or no scene whatsoever, look at marvel like games, japan is never even consider a strong country for marvel type games, I played tvc uas, I would smoke the entire japanese crew on my own, I dont even have people to spar with in my country, and I love the japanese crew for tvc, but thats just the reality, if anything, having an era so globalize on games and being able to play with whoever just make it better for people that previously couldnt play, and japan has another factor which makes them be at a positional disadvantage, they play too slow, like, they are super patient, and is not like its bad in theory, in fact, being patient is one the strongest things you can be doing to be good at street fighter, but current games are brutal to patient players, aggro players such as myself get rewarded for being yolo in offense, and I can understand the decline in japan arguable dominance over certain games (which I still disagree though). Is like how daigo is the most recognizable fgc player in the world, but he is almost never consider the best in any of the games he plays, like, why is he so famous then? I think that's how I see the whole situation.

The previous statement goes to modern FG design philosophies in which Aggression rules because defensive mechanics (which is always harder to do and what Separated higher from lower levels) are soooo mediocre.... I do respect and like that players from this side of the pond are doing well, but it is all the results of modern game design

That's a pretty pea-brain take. All current dev teams have spoken on about raising the floor and lowering the ceiling. These games were made for beginners to win. This cascades into the highest level of play. Those older games were dominated by the Japanese and Korea for a reason. Even tekken 7 is a better example of a game that rewards being good at fighting game basics rather than 1 button super on reaction.

Cost of living is going up… taxes, goods, foods etc. With salary pretty much staying the same, gotta work more to make a living. Hard to make a living of a fighting game though, without any concrete sponsor… most events u get no money. So it’s hard to compete when working overtime or worse, 2 jobs, so you might squeeze like an hour of gameplay now and then vs people that can grind exp whole day long cos coming from a place where “pro-gaming” gives more stable income… or just can sit on social welfare and play whole day…
