The iMac Pro is an absolute work of art inside and out. The layout of everything is perfect. Something to be admired for sure.
@Tigerex9666 жыл бұрын
This is the same design from 2013 for the most part, and that is when their bad designed Mac Pro with limited upgradeability was introduced. To me the outside looks like every other 27" imac, except the color is different. Inside is neatly laid out I agree, but it has bad design as all the other better designed 27" Imacs allow the user to use a door to access the memory, and there is no technical reason this does not have that. And that is bad design. I am guessing the profit levels on ecc memory were too much to resist for Apple and that is why they sealed this "pro" desktop machine shut. Having said that I think the surface desktop is a more innovative design, styling wise, and screen functionality wise, unfortunately Microsoft made it's base way too small to ever have this level of power, even their laptops are more powerful.
@koriecull6 жыл бұрын
The 27" iMac is still magnificent to this day, beautiful design and engineering. A work of art doesn't really get old, only your own mentality. Nobody says; "Hey that Mona Lisa portrait is too old, its crap." You appreciate the art and design for years to come. Even the colourful Mac G3's are timeless classics like Andy Warhols pieces. Tech wise, there will always be different products for different people. You don't want an end-to-end encrypted, secure, unibody 5k powerhouse? Buy something else... life can be simple.
@Tigerex9666 жыл бұрын
I have a iMac 27" and had a colorful one and have been a long time OWC customer. Life is simple. i simply gave me honest truthful opinion and I think you can see it is true. Never did I say it was ugly. I said the design of the iMac Pro is no different than the design of the 2013 iMac 27", so I was surprised people were saying what a magnificent design it is, as in something new. And I pointed out the neat insides and the bad design decision to not include a memory door, since their is no thermal reason for them not too. GREED! If someone was to paint the same mona lisa today and say it is great painting, I would agree, but I would point out it has been done before exactly the same. And that take nothing away from the original, but it does take a little away from the copy if the artist knew of the original. Apple knew of the original and saved money by cloning it and taking away it's memory upgrade feature for consumers, as dcc memory is much more profitable and not having that feature gets customers to order their memory upgrade from Apple at purchase for higher than retail prices, with no credit given for the 32GB base memory you are giving up. Apple is essentially double dipping and double charging you for memory, if you upgrade through them. And that is just wrong and bad design from a consumer perspective. take care.

The best part of it all is how it's designed to thermal throttle the cpu so you can't get the full potential and the speakers are basically sealed inside

The iMac Pro is sort of a weird unit, there is a lot about it that makes it more powerful than a standard iMac, the specs are significantly closer to that of a MacPro model with the processor and the type of RAM that it uses. I believe there are multiple drives RAIDed together to give you optimal speed for the unit. It's going to be a step down from a 2020 MacPro but significantly more powerful than any other Apple computer currently available.

OWC rocks
@Killermike21786 жыл бұрын
According to OWC's site, there are two 128 GB memory upgrade options: 4 X 32 GB RDIMM modules for all four RAM slots and 2 X 64 GB LRDIMM modules to fill up two of the 4 RAM slots. You should really just stick with the former because a) RDIMMs are faster than LRDIMMs, b) four slots being used allows the memory to work in quad channel mode, whereas two slots left unpopulated results in the memory that is used only working in dual channel mode, which is only half as fast as quad channel, and c) OWC states that while 128 GB is the maximum amount of memory supported by the iMac Pro at this time, that they may offer a firmware patch that lifts this limit. Yeah, knowing Apple, don't hold your breath on that one. The only way Apple goes beyond that 128 GB limit on the iMac Pro is with a product refresh, not a simple firmware update. If the Coffee Lake iMacs (non-Pro) allegedly coming later this year are good enough to cannibalize upon the lower-tiered iMac Pros (8-core and 10-core), then they will need to revamp the iMac Pro lineup altogether, anyway. Perhaps a 35-inch model with 8K retina display with the option to go up to 512 GB in 4 X 128 GB of LRDIMM modules for those who want to edit a lot of 8K RED RAW footage with minimal compression?

Mike. Thank you for confirming my question about the dual SSDs. I figured Apple was going to ship them in a RAID. A follow up question if you don’t mind. Are they using their AppleRAID software RAID driver for this (like Disk Utility and Terminal use), or is there a hardware RAID controller built in? This gets interesting with APFS and its possible RAID benefits. It’s also interesting to have the option to have two drives (a boot drive and a file drive) or to keep the fast RAID 0 volume as is. Also, I know it’s very early for this but can you speculate if this architecture will support double the amount of memory (256GBs of RAM), like many previous Apple models do with larger OWC memory kits? All of my 4,1/5,1 Mac Pros are loaded with the 16GB based, 128GB kits. Thank you again! Steve Steele

The memory doesn’t have a bottom latch for easy access like before but it is easy to place the memory card as it’s not soldered. Problem is you need to open up the display first. I think they have restrictions against third party parts. And installing them. Your warranty might not cover it. If apple services it you get 6 months or a year extra on it but only with their parts. Which is more expensive.
@terenceriley13756 жыл бұрын
Apple wants you to figure out your RAM needs at the time of order. Apple will not put 3rd party parts no matter how compatible they may be, into any Apple product. It’s their way or the highway. That’s why a 27” iMac with a i7 Quad core 4.2 MHz with 8GB from Apple is the preferred model to get. You then order OWC 64GB @$649.00 compared to Apple at $1,900.00 on the configuration page. Approximately give or take a buck or two.

the vega 64 not downclocked sucks between 285W and 385W on load the cpu has a 140W tdp but with avx or other workload it is much above this. and this cooling solution is even small for 200W unless you give a shit and let the chips fry above 90° (shiity cheap ugly pcs try to stay below 70° better around 60 or less)
@arijit2766 жыл бұрын
Martin Peterdamm Thats what I have been saying. I think the cpu or gpu is undervolted and down clocked. The vega has a tdp of 400watt alone. I think with prolonged use the gpu cpu will both thermal throttle.

This is an "Apple" computer.. why on Earth would they want to allow users to upgrade memory when it's used as a profit margin widening tool
@Tigerex9666 жыл бұрын
because this has been a trademark feature of ALL "27" imacs, and ALL "PRO" :) Apple desktops. Has it not? This is actually a change from Apple policy, and it's not to make it thinner or lighter or for more battery life like on the laptops and mini's. I am guessing, since this uses much more profitable ecc memory, Apple decided no way would that let the profit potential go away, as they charge more than retail for build to order memory upgrades, and do not give you credit for the base amount you are deleting, thereby they are double dipping as usual on all of their cpu, memory, storage upgrades. As they know pros would buy just enough memory, storage, GPU, that they believe they need and add than more later if needed. That would of course keeps Apple out of the profit on those upgrades, and under Tim Cook's Leadership, Apple has decided that anything that connects to it's Macs, ipads, iphones, must in someway generate them a profit, hardware or software, through the use of licensing, lightning, dongles, certification, app stores, frequent almost forced os upgrades that slow down and obsoletes older apple devices. And newer machines not capable of running older OS's. Apple indeed does this like an art and here is why...... www.macrumors.com/2017/12/27/apple-ceo-tim-cook-102-million/ Insane Greed Pure and simple!

Seems like there could be a market for a custom made back with a removable door by either cutting the existing back and reinforcing it to keep the thermal integrity, or producing a lazer measure replica with a removable door. Of course there goes your warranty, but there could still a possible market for it for 1 year old machines out of warranty. I would consider it, if they could insure it would improve cooling or at least keep it the same, for say $200 in space gray, black or carbon fiber ($300). than you have instant access to your two drive and memory, and possibly even the CPU. For a pro machine you can upgrade. Imagine that :)

Since there's one controller on the T2 that's just handling two physically separate banks of NAND, I don't think it makes sense to call this a RAID. That would be a T2/controller on each NAND bank. This is just one controller looking in two places and unifying the NAND away from the OS, as it would for multiple chips, just more physically seperated now.
@AndysVideoLog6 жыл бұрын
I'm a bit confused by your comment. One T2 chip can easily handle enough to RAID three or more drives together. RAID is Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. So this would, 100%, be considered a RAID. Whatever the case may be, I'm just happy that the CPU, and RAM are not soldered in.
@tipoomaster6 жыл бұрын
This would depend on if the data is stripped, right? We don't see much performance improvement over Apples normal 3GB/s SSD controller, except a bit faster writes, so it seems more like it's a simple spillover mechanism rather than striped RAID. In any other RAID, each drive has its own controller, in this there's two banks of NAND without controllers, and one controller in the T2. Just seems more like a split SSD rather than RAID to me.
@AndysVideoLog6 жыл бұрын
This was a interesting topic so I ended up brushing up on my raid setting and configurations. From everything I have read on the iMac pro, the two drives are striped. I had to read up on RAID again because I have never herd of each drive having its own RAID Controller before. I've setup RAID several times on my machines, both hardware and software Raid 0 & 1. All of the setups I have seen and done require 1 Raid Controller. Lets assume this computer is a standard pc, there are two SSDs connected to two different PCI-E ports. Then RAID configured through BIOS. Wouldn't this be the same idea?
@tipoomaster6 жыл бұрын
I have not said each drive would have its own RAID controller, I think that's where our miscommunication is. In a standard RAID, there would be one RAID controller, and each hard drive or SSD would have its own /drive/ controller. Because a drive by itself has a controller, not a RAID controller. In this setup, there are two banks of NAND without drive controllers, because the T2 chip consumed the SSD controller that used to be in each Apple SSD. It's like, say, one GPU driving two monitors, you would not say that's two GPUs, rather than RAID which would be like an SLI setup of GPUs. Each drive in your old RAIDs has a DRIVE controller, while the whole setup has one RAID controller.
@tipoomaster6 жыл бұрын
The ifixit teardown also went a step further to illustrate my point, see how there's no SSD controller on each of the two NAND blades under there. Two dumb NAND sticks, one SSD controller. www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iMac+Pro+Teardown/101807?.com&

Video is too dark... you could use some better lighting
@sidhammer94616 жыл бұрын
One more light, a bounce card, or even just relocating the light could make a lot of difference. In much of the teardown your key light (brightest) came from behind the guy with the screwdriver... Which created shadows over the subject matter you're trying to show. For something like a teardown, top lighting would help a lot, but so would a bounce card or light coming in at 45º from the camera and the plane of the table (diagonally). This would illuminate but also give shadow definition on the subject (motherboard). The closer your light gets to 90º from the angle of the camera and the lower angle the closest the light gets to parallel to the plane of the subject, or the table in this case, the more definition you'll get on the components since you'll create longer/deeper shadows for any components that are dimensional-this can be overdone, but you should play around with 2 or 3 light setups and some bounce cards to fill dark spots.

I wonder, how much would you have to pay for a new motherboard if the original one dies? $399? $699?

Ordered one of those 128GB kits for my iMac Pro. Had an Apple certified guy to had them installed. Almost ruined my computer. My workstation, on which I depend to make my living. One, or more ram cards were defective and had to return them. A quick search shows a lot of people with the same problem. OWC doesn’t seem to care. I spent almost 140usd to install the ram kit, just to have them removed the next day in order to save my computer. I got a refund on the kit. Lost the installation money. If you read this, be aware. This is not a good product. OWC is being irresponsible with their claims and marketing, selling an awful and dangerous product, as a pro kit. Avoid at any cost

Repairing or upgrading this computer would be a pain in the ass. I worked many years with PC desktops repairs and I wouldn't like to play with that kind of BS (glued screen, springs at heat sinks, short ribbons, delicate hinges for ribbons). There are too many things that can go wrong, so from my point of view this computer is not upgradable at all (it would cost too much).

Clearly my definition of the word "upgradable" is different to Apple's.
@mrunimog15826 жыл бұрын
When did Apple ever mention anything about the iMac Pro being "upgradable"? Perhaps you're confusing the iMac Pro with the upcoming Mac Pro, actually touted modular and upgradeable by Apple.
@Weissman1116 жыл бұрын
That's was my point - it isn't - you're stuck with what you buy with little hope of changing out parts as they become obsolete or inadequate.
@mrunimog15826 жыл бұрын
Well as I said the iMac Pro was never supposed to be upgradeable. Other than the upcoming Mac Pro, which we haven't seen yet. So based on what do you conclude your definition of the word "upgradable" being different to Apple's?

Expect GPU failures in the future with all that thermal paste compound 🤦🏽♂️. They do this on all their products
@Rhamnusia6 жыл бұрын
its pretty common the amount of thermal paste, check a gpu tear down

This is nothing unnormal, don’t know what’s so wrong about it :P

Better too much than not enough on a gpu. No HSF, broski.
@007005566 жыл бұрын
From my knowledge, too much thermal paste like the one in the video cause it to be a insulator of heat which is the total opposite of what it’s supposed to do. I work on Apple computers all day and you won’t believe how many GPU failures on MacBooks and iMacs we see because if this.
