With this movie, Owen Roizman showed just how much you could capture the feeling of a place and time. The low-light shooting didn't just nail the grimy, decaying atmosphere of mid-1970s New York; it really did make the city a character in the movie - an annoying, slightly deranged character whom you'd cross the street to avoid but would never forget. Mr Roizman, I salute you. (Also, The Towering Inferno won the Best Cinematography Oscar and you weren't even nominated? What's that about?) Between this, Peter Stone's attitude-soaked script, the terrific ensemble acting, David Shire's brilliant and brilliantly used soundtrack, and one of the greatest final 10 seconds in movie history, this may be the most underrated film of the past 50 years.

One of my all-time favorite New York Movies, as I was born and raised in da Bronx. I was first introduced to this movie as a child when it had its network premiere on ABC's Sunday Night at the Movies. I must have watched this movie at least 50 times since then, and as a filmmaker in LA, I appreciate this movie that much more.

This guy's filmography is remarkable. The French Connection. The Exorcist. Three Days of the Condor. Network. Absence of Malice. Tootsie. How have I never heard of him?

Roizman is a five-time Academy Award nominee for Best Cinematography: The French Connection, The Exorcist, Network, Tootsie, and Wyatt Earp.

The camera work in Pelham (only just watched it the other day) feels a lot more streamlined and locked down then French Connections gritty handheld guerilla style look. Interesting to know they were shot by the same guy.
