Money is made by getting attention, which is grabbed best by sensationalising and presenting extremism, and invoking fear, division, anger or some other emotional response in the observer. In the UK it did not used to be like this for the BBC, and many older people have not realised that the situation has changed. Yes, the BBC runs on license payers' money but the news service discarded its integrity and adopted a competitive goal many years ago, particularly with domestic reporting. Also, of course, main media corporations have a "relationship" with the government. The lack of critical thinking from so many people who are intellectually dishonest, lazy (this the main reason) or incapable allowed this to happen. The truly qualified (who usually have "boring" and cautious views) have been replaced by those appointing themselves as qualified and say what the particular media channel wants to hear.

The cost of living and housing crisis is now so extreme that this eruption of mindless violence should not be so unexpected. William of Orange, the Georgian kings. King George 1st couldn't speak English, he only spoke German. As a person born in a British Commonwealth country, the legacy of British colonisation and racisim is still relevant in our society today with the indigenous people of Aotearoa subject to daily injustice, no recognition of traditional values, dismissive of Māori sovereignty and rights which are being eroded by this current National right government. Unfortunately, many people of colour, and people from the Global South are noticing something in these conversations as pertains the UK, USA, and Europe. Yes, we know not all Brits, US, etc. are like the centre and right-wing. But is really disappointing and gaslighty when British, US, etc. people try to distance themselves from the far-right or claim innocence/ignorance. The West is suffering from a racist, xenophobic, and classist society that has been happening for centuries. Some people keep saying racism isn't rampant in the UK - this is so false, and one just has to ask any foreigner or POC. People from the West: you can't distance yourself from this: it's an intrinsic part of your society. This is a major time in which you need to learn from and listen to POC and people in the Global South.

On a web page, this morning, there was story about Nigel Farage believing that he needed to increase his security (against a threat from who? He didn't say ). I commented that if he insisted on standing on a tall platform, created for him by the British media, and shouted at the top of his voice, he shouldn't be surprised if he, occasionally, attracted the wrong sort of attention. My comment was not allowed because it went "against community standards"! I think that that spoke volumes!
