You know what the craziest part of this story is? The mom is divorcing the dad because she thinks it's the family curse that killed her baby, when it's actually her negligence that caused it.

I saw a theory once that said "the curse is not real, its just something that came from the grieving mind of Edith Finch". In essence, the family let the "curse" take hold of their life and mind, to the point that everyone on the family expected to die and just.. didn't care? Some deaths are just accidental but a few are pure negligence. Was it the curse thar built the child swing on a cliff? Or was it a stupid negligent decision?. Did the curse drown the baby or was it a mother's neglect. Even the poem of how they say "the baby was probably happy in his last moments, so you should be happy too" when referring to how "it wasn't her fault, it was the curse" just puts more weight on the idea that they are just numb to it because its all that darn curse and not their fault.

Eugh. I don't feel anything for the fictional baby or the family or whatever, but seeing stuff like this in a game is a harsh and depressing reminder of just how many children die every day from stupid, stupid shit like this. It's depressing and sickening to think about and by and large it's not like you can do anything about it either. Even well meaning and normally attentive parents and guardians are still just human and one momentary lapse is all it takes. I hate it

There's a video about this game that explains who is the "villain" of the game and what is the "curse" of the Finches that I really recommend (Not the Game Theory one LOL). One thing that the video talks about is how the curse of the family boils down to them being irresponsible and blaming fate instead of taking responsabilities. We dont know how the baby felt at its last moments but the dad takes comfort in believing that the baby wasn't concerned at his imminent fate.

She would not want me to mourn for her death but to be happy. Oh and my parents are great parents, it was a family friend that put my sister to bed but had laid her on her stomach not her back. But do you know how many times stuff like this, and worse, has happened throughout history? It hardens you man, just thinking about how evil, dark, sad, and messed up our history is. People used to literally dash infants against rocks (its in the bible, and other historical accounts corroborate it) when invading countries (not all the time obv, but still it happened at all) and burn infants to death in the white-hot hands of statues while the baby cried in agony. You can't be a historian or a student of history without either being psycho, or so hard that you could be mistaken for one. Useful and important to reach, but not objective. Again we set the standard, going below or above it, doesn't say anything objective about the world. One can say, it's _because_ our ideals are so high, history seems so unbearably wretched. We can either continually be depressed about something that by design, is an ever distant goal. Or we can recognise, that higher or lower, it doesn't change our duty to continue to be better and leave the world better.

I’m glad she cried. Better let it out than just bottle it inside. Doesn’t matter if it was just a game, the emotion she felt was real. Though my reaction would be same as Fauna’s. The baby’s death was preventable, like who in their right mind leaves their baby alone in a bathtub that has a handle so light it can be turned with a toy frog? Bullshit. Anyone who looks after children, specially babies, keep this in mind: NEVER LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED UNLESS PROPERLY SECURED.

It's not the video game part that surprises me, some are very well written and after 30+ hours of engagement can have a big impact on people even if they don't have such empathy. It's the fact that there was 0 setup, and you know from the moment the mom walks away what's going to happen. All the usual storytelling elements that would make people cry are missing.

Many kids drown even when parents are watching them. Like in a pool or at the beach. Drowning people can't scream, speak, or flail their arms. They drown silently. They bob for a bit then sink. Parents who don't know what drowning looks like think the kid is just holding their breath or playing under water until it's too late. Drowning is fucking terrifying.
