Whits and wages is one of those games that keep showing up at the thrift shop. Till the time I've got the wits and wagers family edition Whitson wagers party edition I think which in wits and wagers just standard edition. Anyway, that's my comment on that. The Turing machine is basically the same as mastermind. I think someone is already pointed that out, but I would confer that. You can also pick up mastermind at thrift stores. It comes in two versions. Also, I think at the basic version then there's the super mastermind version

Thank you for the interesting discussions. It sounds like I enjoy Living Forest more than you (and that's ... okay). Playing the physical copy of the game with others around a table makes any game better. One thing that helped me appreciate the game is playing the solo mode - the "AI" is unrelenting! I learned the importance of using movement to trigger needed actions and the importance of sometimes absorbing some fire damage (to not always extinguish all the fires). Also, I learned that I don't always need to play out cards until two Solitary Animals appear, but can stop when I have what I need (which means focusing on what I need at that moment). This all made me a much better player and gave me more control when I faced live opponents - sticking them with fire damage is painful. I have observed that the newer players can bog down the game with inefficient play - they feel the need to buy buy buy animals, while ignoring trees. All that said, the Sacred Flower strategy is definitely harder to win with and I'll handicap myself by going after that with beginners. I'm curious about the expansion, because it apparently addresses this. Thanks for the discussion about Longboard. That seemed to get forgotten by Kniziaphiles and I'll give that another look. I actually enjoy San Francisco quite a bit, though I think it is a more subtle game and not full of high/low emotions. Gang of Dice is my favorite newer, small-box Knizia. And you have one of my favorite Knizia's of the past year on your wall - Mille Fiori! Enjoy!

I play Turing Machine solo too but i don't use the middle hexagon bit, i just put all the clues in front of me. But yeah i definitely can't see playing it with my friends unless its with a particular friend maybe! Fun facts looks good though, it's nice to have another good party game, I wonder if we could scale it up to 10 by just adding our own mini board/paper

I have played Fun Facts only at 4 and we enjoyed it very much. It's an own for me, it's easier to play it in multilingual groups (or different groups speaking different languages) than word games. In Living Forest timing is important, you should buy cards before getting the first player marker so you can extinguish more fire, and avoiding that when other players would. The wind for the rondel is also important. Isn't Mastermind, also know as Master logic and Code breaking the game that Braiden is referring to?

Did you try Furnace with the Variant rules? The cards are in a row and when you get a new card, you add it to one of the ends of the row. It decreases much of the AP/fiddling in the base game. No idea how Interbellum might affect all this.

Braiden, have you tried Turing Machine on Nightmare mode? It's brain-melting, but 80% more satisfying to reach the solution at the end. The difference is that you do not know which Verifier is associated with which Verifier card, so there's an extra level to figure out. It was intimidating to play with a group of four, as we were all silently sitting around the table with our heads in our hands, but I think it could be a good kind of difficult for solo play.
@AllYouCanBoard
@AllYouCanBoard Жыл бұрын
I haven't yet but I definitely want to! I think this could be the key for me. I don't think it would change my opinion of it being a play but I anticipate liking that variant! - Braiden

@@AllYouCanBoard I agree with your "Play it" opinion. I do not own it, but after playing it a few times, I don't feel the need to. I mostly play with friends, and this is not a game I enjoy in a group. I think this would make a great app, that you could conveniently play a round of in 10-15 minutes solo. The nightmare version was not good for a group, but I could see the allure for solo gaming, at least for the thrill of a puzzle

I might purchase "Longboard" (not sure) despite similarities to the Keltis/Lost Cities offerings, given its ability to 'steal' and accommodation of higher player counts. I don't think I like the 'hidden sticker element', however - I'd rather play with 'open info' by either splaying the cards, or using a simplified/alternative 'scoring variant' (say, the '3' cards are worth 3 pts, 'other odds' worth 1 pt and 'all evens' at 2 pts = provides a similar dispersion/frequency of scoring as the actual game). I also like the innovative auction system in "Furnace" - but feel the constant commodity conversion is a bit fiddly/taxing for me. So I'd rather play other 'quest fulfillment' games, a la Tides of Time, or King Arthur/Card Game.
