We owe Oprah an unfathomable debt of gratitude for making books and literacy an essential part of our daily lives! She has done so much by enriching our reading experiences with world class authors! Each interview she does with the authors is master class in literature!

Love, love when Dr. Verghese talks - words, expressions and all. Delightful to hear these podcasts

I just finished this book. I don't what else to say about this masterpiece that Oprah hasn't said. The bridge Dr. Verghese creates linking spirituality and mysticism with science and physiology is outstanding. I think this should be taught as part of the Indian curriculum for literature in schools and perhaps all over the world.

The tension about the plavu tree and his reluctance to cut it down made me so sad, and then as things fall apart more, as he feels "less than" and wants to exert some control over Elsie, the tension builds and I felt something terrible would happen, and then what happens is so sudden, stark and terrible. The death of Ninan is absolutely devastating. The grief and pain from it are overwhelming, and my own ankles and arms were hurting from running with the body, with no possible remediation. It is a scene like a Greek tragedy.

Listening to the podcasts now after I finished it last week. And I am so grateful for it. The insider information and the insight that Dr. Verghese brings. It's such a privilege to be able to talk to an author of this kind of book, to be able to dig deep and get clarity on some of the things that perhaps you didn't get or understand. Grateful 🙏🏼

Look at my luck 💚. So I am a poet and I had a mental block, I did not want to read and somehow I listened to a podcast for the first time, this was three days ago. I listened to a couple of them and I thought let me be more intentional, what topic would I like to learn about, water. I literally searched for "podcasts about water" and that is how I ended up here.... 3 episodes later 😂. I'm super grateful for the way the Lord works, I am beyond inspired.

The tree represents the family. It was planted by father and us symbolic of the sturdiness and eternal existence of a family Many families have sacred trees like Tulasi banana tree etc Cutting a tree is like cutting off a family support

As someone surrounded by tree cutters, both man-made and hurricane-made, I protested from Elsie's very first request: But WHY? Why must the tree be sacrificed for your viewing pleasure? I can't.
@sn3501 Жыл бұрын
I felt the same way! I was hoping the author and Oprah would have discussed it more. I can totally see why Philipose would be reluctant to cut down the tree, the one he grew up watching from his room. No wonder the request bothered him so much, it seemed she was asking him to cut his own soul. The tragedy that unfolded from there was gutting to say the least!

I agree with this so much! I too would have loved to hear more about Elsie’s role in the breakdown during the podcast discussion between Oprah and Dr Verghese (though I very much enjoyed the insights into Philipose)!

I was disappointed in the almost gleeful treatment of Elise leaving Philipos. A "Bye Felicia" moment? That was a human tragedy. Philipos lost everything - his child , the woman he loved. Elise lost her husband, had to leave the only mother she ever knew, her son and the life she thought she was going to have. It was very sad. . Unless you were being gleeful about the beautiful writing- it was just stunning.

Interesting decision. I think it would ruin the story for me, knowing what’s coming as I’m reading. The surprises and unexpected twists and turns were what engaged me emotionally and kept me wanting more.

These episodes are fantastic and enhance the reading experience so much. Also, the description on this episode needs revised to say Parts 5 & 6 (not 3 & 4)

I might be misunderstanding here, but after reading the book, I’m puzzled by the discussion that seems to place all the blame for the marriage issues on Philipose.

34:30-35:07...Wow, neat that a guest named Dorian visits Oprah's show. There is an interesting character on 1990s soap opera _One Life to Live_ named Dorian Cramer Lord who has Oprah's high sensitivity, big brown eyes and high intelligence and who, like Oprah, went from rags to riches through her own hard work and like Oprah, loved to read. 💙💜💙💜💙💜💙💜

In this section, I am so upset with Phillapos. I feel, a Oprah stated, the rift began when he didn't cut the tree! First the rise, and then the fall.

Everything about this scene gave me the impression that she knew she was pregnant. The sexual interaction, although not planned, was convenient for what she was beginning to see unavoidable.
