Well, she is muslim. The cues are very obvious - she knew that habibi was a reference to a boy and she was not impressed being called habibti which from my google search refers to a girl. Her brothers' name is Ahmed from the tail end of the phone conversation. This therefore explains her respectful demeanor and professionalism. It's a cultural thing as a muslim girl/woman will not raise her voice, curse and behave overly dramatic to any man or maybe woman for that matter. So yes, I was surprised that a 21st century 16 y/o could maintain such a professional demeanor but after my psychoanalysis and finding out that she is probably muslim, I must say that I'm no longer surprised.

Mariam is so nice. Even when she gets really angry, she doesn't sound aggressive. I can see how people would pick on her. Seems to me she was blamed intentionally for something she didn't do. The allegation of her flirting with 'Coach Jim' is interesting. I wonder if a woman there he's having relations with felt jealous of her, perhaps suspecting she liked him (when she was just being nice (or maybe he liked her,) and stole the papers, claiming Mariam did it, thus forcing him to choose between them. Many people would get really pissed if accused and punished for something they didn't do, and some might get violent, but certainly not Mariam.
