Beautiful piece of wood. I wish I lived in an area I could source my own pieces. I would be happy to spend hours every weekend to find the right pieces. ... Trying to find one online is just no fun at all, and they're never exactly what you're hoping for.

Awesome, thanks for sharing your video and this method

Thanks for the tip. I had never heard of oxalic acid. I would try a larger brush. Maybe even a spray bottle if you wear a respirator.

oxalic acid is a big part of the compounds found in the oxalis genus! a common plant in that group is oxalis stricta, the yellow-flowered woodsorrel or clover that grows in a lot of yards or roadsides!

Just a FYI, you should always add the acid to the water not the water to the acid as you did.

well, were you ever able to get the newly worked area to color blend in by using acid?
@yesyoumay9 жыл бұрын
Do you ever rinse the acid off so the color doesn't continue to change as the acid works?
@kathyhiggins78849 жыл бұрын
Yes, there are some folks that advise to rinse off the acid. I didn't and my piece didn't continue to get lighter. I think that's because the mixture didn't penetrate that much.

Sorry, I am very new at this. What would you use to rinse it off and can I get rid of Danish Oil stains with this method? Thankx!

whats kind of brush you use. nylon? or something else and is glass container the only safe way to mix in or any plastic container?
@scottoldham74594 жыл бұрын
Nylon throw away brush or a rag. Use safety glasses, gloves and a respirator as it is terrible to breath. We use it full strength for two-five minutes and rinse well.

worth knowing oxalic acid is cheap IF you buy the right product. a lot of products you wouldn't know it was oxalic acid unless you read the fine print. so eg you can go to the wood finish section of a big hardware store, and it's sold in 10% solution as a high tech deck cleaner. or you can go to the construction section and buy it as rust stain remover, in pure dry crystals for $15 a kg ... which is immensely cheaper

There is Barkeeper's Friend. I wonder how much of that is oxalic acid. I do know it has that in it. I just never looked at the sheet to see how much of it.

Yeah the only reason to measure is so you don't waste it. You want to dissolve as must of the crystals as possible to get maximum suspension. Anymore is just going to sit on the bottom and not dissolve. The ph level is only slightly higher than lemon juice so it won't burn your skin unless you are very sensitive. Then you probably will know that by other things causing skin irritations. Oxalic acid comes from rubarb leaves. The if ingested it can cause kidney issues from the crystals reforming in the kidneys so don't drink it or you will risk issues there. I have no seen the amount that you need to ingest before this happens but I imagine it would be a significant amount say over a cup or so so don't run to the hospital if you get a drop or two splashed in the mouth. Just spit and rinse your mouth out and you will still probably live.
