Let's Walk!

2 жыл бұрын

Join me for a walk around the legendary city of Oxford, best-known as the home of the oldest university in the English-speaking world! But along with the wealth of colleges and striking university buildings to be found around the city, there's even more to Oxford, from its role in the English Civil War to serving as the place where a number of works of fiction were inspired!
On our walk around Oxford, we pass countless interesting landmarks, just a few of which include Christ Church, Christ Church Cathedral, Alice's Shop, Tom Tower, St. Aldate's Church, Oxford Town Hall, Carfax Tower, High Street, Oxford Covered Market, Lincoln College, Brasenose College, the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Magpie Lane, Merton College, Corpus Christi College, University College, the Examinations Schools, Magdalen College, Queen's Lane, All Souls' College, the Radcliffe Camera, the Bodleian Library, the Bridge of Sighs, the Clarendon Building, the Sheldonian Theatre, the White Horse Pub, Balliol College, the site of the execution of the Oxford Martyrs, the Martyrs' Memorial, The Randolph Hotel, the Ashmolean Museum, St. Mary Magdalene Church, Cornmarket Street, St. Peter at the Northgate Church, Queen Street, Oxford County Hall and Oxford Castle and Prison.
Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Oxford:

🎤 To watch with subtitles - please click the 'CC' button on your KZbin video player :) Good evening! And welcome to a bumper walk around the heart of one of England's most famous cities: Oxford! From its university to its castle and the many hidden stories that lie within, there's a wealth of riveting history and stunning sights to be found in Oxford, just a few of which we'll visit on this tour! One thing that we didn't get a chance to see in Oxford was the city's rivers, of which there are two. By Magdalen College, you'll find the picturesque River Cherwell, while on the opposite side of the city is the River Isis. The Isis is actually just the River Thames, which flows all the way towards London, but the river in Oxford is often known as the Isis when referred to in the world of rowing, a big part of university life in the city!

Thank you for your comprehensive tour around Oxford. As an alumnus of Merton College, and retired academic of thirty plus years, may I mention that Merton College is also home to the oldest continuously functioning college library in the world ! The ' time ceremony ' you talked about is great fun, walking backwards to preserve the time/space continuum :) Merton Street also has one of the roughest road surfaces in all of Oxford - cyclists beware :( Wonderful tour, well narrated, with all the essential city history - top shelf indeed !

My dad read PPE (Philosophy, Politics & Economics for anyone who doesn't know!) at Corpus Christi College back in the late 1940s, a stone's throw from your college. As the son of a bricklayer and a domestic servant, he was the first in his family to go to university, winning a scholarship to Oxford. His time at Oxford University was one of the highlights of his life.

@@Fitness4London Thank you so much for your interesting comment. Yes, I know Corpus Christi College well, and enjoyed the company of a number of colleagues there. Sadly, not all students who entered university from, may I say more humble backgrounds were treated with equality and respect, especially in the 1940`s. Happily everything has changed since then, with students from many different backgrounds and economic circumstances. Your father must have impressed, to win a scholarship, and entrance to Oxford University - and it was a delight for me to read this :)
@Fitness4London

@@MrTorleon Great to hear that you had good social/academic links with Corpus Christi. My dad mixed with other colleges and had lifelong friends from his time at Oxford. I think he did well at interview because from an early age he had strong views backed up by persuasive arguments. You're right, the diversity at Oxford University (and The Other Place!!!) has improved so much recently.
@MrTorleon

@@Fitness4London Indeed, and Oxford University, as with other universities, continues to expand it`s accessibility for potential students from a wide and diverse range of social and economic backgrounds. I began my undergrad year just as the university embarked on a ( highly contentious ) programme to make all colleges bi-gender - a process not completed - if my memory serves, for well over twenty five years. Strongly supported for the most part, but with a vocal faction who considered it the end of Oxford University - but it all worked out beautifully :) Once again, I genuinely appreciate knowing of your fathers time at Oxford.I too have had lifelong friends, catching up during my frequent visits - although, alas, a number have inevitably since passed away. Thank you :)

The architecture alone is why Oxford and Yale remind me of each other. Even though Oxford is HUGE student-population wise compared to Yale, they just REALLY remind me of each other. I ❤'d my Midsummer at Oxford program (I studied/resided in Magdalen College, which was GORGEOUS! I did unfortunately fall into the Magdalen/Maudlin pronounciation thing 😂) when I was in grad school at Yale. BEST experience of my academic journey. I think I also approximate Oxford & Yale because they do actually have a LOT of academic connections. The city of Oxford is REALLY amazing too, and compared to New Haven, Connecticut (which I didn't particularly care for 😝 though Yale's campus is AMAZING) it PERFECTLY complements the prolific history of the University. I think the Radcliffe Camera & The Sheldonian Theatre 🎭 & The Bodleian Library are simply my FAVORITE places at Oxford. All just STUNNING in their beauty and dignity. The Ashmolean Museum & Oxford Castle & Prison were pretty cool as well.

Thank you for a great tour of the City I lived in throughout my twenties. It has reminded me to revisit sometime, especially to see the site of the Oxford Martyr's execution and memorial of my name sake one Hugh Latimer.

0:10: Our world on Andromeda moon, formerly known as “Jelly”, but now called Crazy Person World. The sky is beautiful and so pristine blue because the presence of the Metal-Glass moon in our orbit. So beautiful and so clear. But Oxford buildings were previously bigger but now removed to this moon so they feel larger than the environment they are in. These buildings haven’t looked this beautiful in a while.

Looks really nice, I would love to visit Oxford someday. I can trace my family in Oxford all the way back to 1564 to my 11x great grandmother Elizabeth White. Greetings from Mark in Canada 🇨🇦

By way of clarification: ALL students belong to a college. It’s not something they “aspire to” as stated here! You HAVE to belong to a college to study at the University. You apply to a particular college or you can make an open application when the University allocates you to a college.

Great. Going back there now as a tourist 40 years after being a student. Taking more notice now. (One tiny quibble: why did you only use Lewis Carroll the pen-name, rather than the writer’s real name, Henry Dodgson)
