I'm pleased that it's helped you Jennifer. I hadn't thought of that side of it. For me I am finding it harder but if someone told me to stop I would tell them to get lost! I have added more weighted strength and conditioning. I would say to the listener to look at sport literature like Next Level by Stacey Simms.

YES to a whole episode about running through perimenopause and menopause. I am not there yet, but it will not be long until - and I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I am a 43 year old who has really done little to no training for a lot of my life - but last 5 years slowly increased - and found a long hidden love for running. Really want to do as much as I possibly can to keep it up and keep my body (and mind) strong and healthy as I get older.

47 year old runner. I had a hysterectomy for medical reasons 2 years ago. Getting back to running after that surgery was an interesting experience, if you know you know. I started menopause at 44 and it’s going much better now. Hopefully, the worst symptoms are behind me now. 🤞 Running is an amazing way to help with symptoms and more importantly sleep! We need to talk about these things! My doctors tell me to run on! I’m in the US. Whoever told her to stop is full of it! Running helps SO MUCH with symptoms!!!

i ran at my best during my peri menopause , and as a uk athletics sports coach i would recommend to keep running , i felt tired more quickly but it kept my mental health in check , if i wanted to cry I'd cry when i was running , if i felt a mood coming on id take myself for a run , it helped me to stop taking moods out in my family , im happy to say running got me through what i would call the worse 8 years of my life , i believe i have another 2 or 3 years to go before im finally past my post menopause, it has stopped me binge eating and impulsive internet shopping , so i kept my spending down , no weight gain and it brought up my low mood swings, so no family arguments , im also lucky i work in a gym that is the bottom of my street so I can pop in anytime and i don't need a gym subscription!!!

Amazing result Rick well done! With debriefs for runs that go worse than expected we often try to pinpoint a reason why (went out too fast, fueling etc) but it would be nice to see similar for races that go better than expected too. Like most people would suggest going out 30-45 seconds faster than target pace is a terrible idea (as alluded to by Sarah waiting for the blow up!) but seeing as Rick was able to keep it up and even push on towards the end that his 5 past 2 was the wrong target for him. I think it would be interesting to retrospectively discuss was there indicators in training to see this was the case etc or did Rick just perform a miracle on the day!

For in race hydrating, if the cups are difficult, what about bringing one's own water bottle/soft flask etc? I know it's something to carry, but I seem to either catch a bug, or dust at the wrong point. In the 'nothing new on race day', the water cup trials and tribulations seems to befuddle many runners. Thanks!

I agree with Rick about not wanting to lose momentum by stopping to drink. But during my half marathon PB (1:29) I had no water and one gel, which I think resulted in me really struggling for the final few Kms, so it was a good lesson to always have some water in a half marathon even if you need to walk for a few seconds

My doctor said that running was exactly what was needed during perimenopause.... Very important to build strength so s&c vital but also running for bone density and for JOY XX as for menopause.. The cessation of menses... Ridiculous to infer that women should not run once their fertility has gone, I would say that bladder control can be an issue and there are ways to deal with that! But surely the only reason to stop running is because of illness / injury or not wanting to... As 'the change' is none of those I would query any advice to stop running once you get to a certain age x

It's tough with the NHS in Britain. I get why it's like that but doctors/physios etc are very ready just to tell you to stop running. When I think that the money spent on helping someone so they can run pales into insignificance with the money spent on increased pressure to the NHS due to a sedentary population who don't exercise.

@@emmarunyeard6832 awesome, I think it really depends on who you get. Obviously I don't mean to throw any shade at the NHS, they do incredible work under increasingly hard conditions but sometimes you get someone who's really helpful and listens, sometimes it's not like that at all. I think some doctors see running related stuff as self inflicted.

@@CaptainBrash it really does, I have been lucky as all the physicians I see are generally runners themselves round here but I can imagine some are less 'evolved' I think nowadays with a new surge of running interest (every celeb doing marathons which I love) we should stop hearing so much negativity.. SUITS me as an ultra trail wife 😂, all activities come with risk x
@CaptainBrash2 ай бұрын
@@emmarunyeard6832 I agree. I think even though we are still very sedentary as a population, fitness in general is much more in the public consciousness than it ever has been and we have much more literature on the positives and negatives. A lot of the negatives people talk about are either assumed knowledge or anecdotal and even someone as intelligent and skilled as a doctor isn't immune to that kind of bias.

haha, the erotic pace chart made me laugh! If it has a lot of curves... You can practice drinking from cups. Squeeze the top to funnel the drink into your mouth and time it with your breathing and footfall. If you need it, practice it during one of your runs where you set up a table or have someone hand cups to you and you run past several times to practice drinking. Sarah is brave that she took a full English breakfast an hour before a long run. When I have a full English, I can't run for 4-5 hours because of all the fat and protein in it. I really felt the discomfort when I heard what splits Rick was putting up there. Sarah, your stomach is tougher than mine. I would have seen the bacon again, I guess.
