I just wrote a very thoughtful essay addressing the issue of wimmin DJs somewhere in these comments (in case anyone is interested). You are right, these questions are inevitable ..... and extremely patronising to women!
@aaronmatthew67096 жыл бұрын
The dude spends 30 minutes describing the long road it took, as well as healthy dose of luck, to get where he is. She wants him to wave his hand and make women famous and admired, and of course, he cant tell her the real truth, because as you noticed, a patronizing answer befits a patronizing question
@orbojunglist6 жыл бұрын
I don't get why it's his responsibility...it's like the person asking the question thinks every guy that does this actually makes it big, there are thousands of guys still going through the shit he did for years... *this* is what makes you a great DJ, not just someone that mixes one song into another.

The question that gets asked at 37:00 is cringe-worthy. I have no major problem with her question until she says “and what are you doing as a prominent male figure in the industry to change this?” The question becomes so wrong at that point, and I really hope people understand that. She’s setting up a stage to make an ideological statement and then implying that Diplo, as a male and beneficiary of an evil patriarchy (in her view), is obligated to promote her ideology. Unless Diplo has at some point expressed an interest in discussing politics or feminism or something, this question is shameful and had no business being asked in this type of forum.
@fquint64686 жыл бұрын
Artie Martello Diplo actually has spoken about politics and feminism before, in a past interview he talked about how he thought some of his past music videos were very misogynistic and he wouldn’t do something like them anymore.
@artie31646 жыл бұрын
Okay, fair enough; He sees the misogynistic side of the entertainment industry; the exploitation of women's sexuality.That doesn't excuse the question at all, and really isn't related. I mean, yeah there's ton's of misogynistic sexualization of women in entertainment. But this question had nothing to do with that. What the question is doing is promoting an ideology. It' rests on the assumption that it is inherently bad that there are far less female DJs than males DJs. The question is appalling and the woman asking it is living in a fantasy where her world-view is supreme and should be at the forefront of every discussion. If she actually gave a shit why there were fewer female DJs/producers, she would have looked it up, done a little research. I'm sure she had advanced knowledge of the lecture. Did she do some research and ask a substance-based question? No, she asked an ideologically-motivated question. Hell, it's even obvious she just looked up the list of top 50 DJs. She didn't want to learn. She wanted to push an ideology in a situation that did not call for it, and with no attempt to have some knowledge of what she was talking about. Disgraceful.
@fquint64686 жыл бұрын
Artie Martello Dude im not arguing about her question lol I was just saying that Diplo has spoken about misogyny and the Misogynistic tones in his previous work before. I just don’t see this as that big of a deal.
@artie31646 жыл бұрын
Well I appreciate the info. I do see the question as a big deal though. It's a push for an ideology that has no foundation support, and it's pushed in many levels of academia. I think we are playing an extremely dangerous game when we allow political ideology to be pushed in schools. And it happens not just in universities, but at a much younger age too.And I don't mean to sound like I'm coming at you personally because I'm replying.
@VikToreus6 жыл бұрын
"as a prominent male figure in the industry to change this".. i agree there was no need to ask this question. Why does Diplo have to take responsibility? Yes he might be a prominent male figure in the dance music scene, but why does he have to change some kind of gender imbalance? That's like saying.. people still do drugs as festivals, as a prominent male figure what are you doing to change this... Festivals are damaging the environment, as a prominent male figure what are you doing to change this. He doesn't have to do anything. Also.. Is there such a gender imbalance in the DJ industry?? If you simply look at the Top50 DJ Mag, yes there are more males and than females. But why? Mostly because it just so happens to be males who are getting to that level. I've been a DJ for over 15 years, at least in my area (United Kingdom) there are plenty of female DJs. In fact, some of them get booked at gigs instead of male DJs! (But thats a different story). Nowadays, I dont feel there is a huge barrier or alot of sexual discrimination that is preventing female DJs from succeeding. Maybe there was several years ago, but I find it less so now. They just need work at it like everyone else and push their careers forwards. And finally, why refer to them as "female DJs". Lets just call them DJs.
