Why in hydrogen peroxide the oxygen has a charge of 1-?I had looked at the dot and cross diagram but I don't quite understand an explanation would be much appreciated.

hi, say you had SO42-, is the exam likely to ask us to work out the O.N of oxygen? i mean yes I know oxygen is -2 but if they asked me to work out oxygen, I would have thought sulphur was -2 but actually it is +6. thank you! your videos are a God send!!!!
@MaChemGuy8 жыл бұрын
Aysha Mehmood They wouldn't ask about oxygen in this case as it's too easy. Glad your finding them helpful:)

Is the O.S of oxygen in h2o2 -1 because an oxygen atom uses one electron to bond with 1 hydrogen and one electron to bond with another oxygen atom?

Correct

hiya I'm trying to do a question. its asking me to use oxi numbers to find out if fe has be oxidised or reduced. the equation is: 2Fe3+ + 2I- ==> 2Fe2+ + I2 In the book it says the fe goes from +3 to a -2 oxi number. But I thought it would've been +2. any help explaining????
@MaChemGuy8 жыл бұрын
The book's wrong, you're right
@aaronali67138 жыл бұрын
+MaChemGuy so would the answer be that: fe has been reduced as it's gone from +3 to +2. also thanks for replying so quickly.

You need to be careful with your definition of oxidation number for organic molecules - the carbon in methanal (HCHO) is certainly using 4 electrons to bond covalently to another element but it has an oxidation number of 0 here !

Thanks for the comment. Not the sort of thing tested at A level, phew!
