There is a Vegan place in NYC "Seasoned Vegan" in Harlem. I went on my first time there several months ago and had the vegan oxtail. Lawdy lawdy lawdy it was slammin'. If anyone is coming to NYC or lives here even if you are not Vegan their prep and spices and sauce took me back to Texas as a kid eating oxtails. Visually this segment was amazing.

Some people are so closed minded. The reality is we were giving what they didn’t want in the big house. That’s for islanders and the ones that made it to the Americas. I wish this young lady well and I’ve never heard of soda in oxtails, yet we have always been able to use what we had to make deliciousness.

All 🇯🇲 Jamaicans-before you even go any further cut it out!! My father is Jamaican (and an amazing cook btw)and my mom is Gullah from South Carolina (also an amazing cook which my father co-signs) and I hate that people downplay the full southern culinary food culture. It’s much more than fried chicken mac yam and greens. The versions are different but Southern black people have ALWAYS made oxtails. we also have our version of dumplings too!! Just like Trinidad have their version of dishes, and haitians, and Belize..etc. Y’all stay trying to act like Bkack Americans have no culture and making terrible mac and cheese at West indian restaurants because y’all don’t know the recipe 😂. Our oxtails are just as legit and been made for just as long. Why do people think Black American don’t cook with the same taste memory from the African countries we were sold from. We have a version of almost every single caribbean dish using ingredients we had here. We just had one more boat trip if you get what I mean.

If you go to any take out Jamaican restaurant in the USA, you will see the same thing on the menu. Braised Oxtail, Jerk Chicken Curry Goat Curry Chicken Brown Stew Chicken Escovitch Fish ackee and salt fish etc served with rice and peas or white rice or ground provisions. Side orders include plantains, steam cabbage etc. Beef, chicken, vegetable patties and so on. You know exactly what is on the menu at most take out Jamaican restaurants. Similar to Chinese restaurants. You know exactly what is on the menu at take out Chinese restaurants. You cannot say the same for Black American Restaurants. The menu is all over the place and Black Americans are not frequently buying food from Black American restaurants. If you notice, Black Americans are buying everybody else food. You guys buy Mexican, Hispanics, Asian, Chinese, Caribbean, Italian, fast food, every other country food except your own. Not the case with Caribbean/Jamaican people. We live at our Restaurants. That's the difference. I know Caribbean restaurant owners appreciate the Black American support. You got to realize that Caribbean culture and Black American culture is not the same. I was cooking for my entire family of 6 when I was 10 years old. I was the first to come home from school, my mom and dad was at work and my brothers and sister was still at school. I had to come home and cook for everybody. We had no money to buy fast food. So it's a different culture and way of life and the majority of Jamaicans were like me. They never had a choice, they had to get started early. So Jamaicans and Caribbean people are not competing with Black Americans or anyone when it comes on to cooking. It's just part of our DNA. We not doing it for likes or to get popular.

Facts! Spoke the truth. Bottom line cooking is about reinventing the wheel or creating a new wheel. I can say that as a classically trained chef. There are many ways to do the same dish based on culture and origin. FYI- When you put soda or wine you don’t really taste it because it cooks down. A lot of time the soda (the sugar in it) is tenderizer.

Jamaicans are not the only ones who make oxtails-cut it out. My father is Jamaican and my mother is Southern. Black Americans have been making oxtails in the South since slavery times

@hello! What is your problem. Did you see us trying to associate ourselves with any of this nonsense. The hosts tried to give the impression that it was a Jamaican inspired meal by trying to imitate our accent. How many times did you hear the male trying to talk patois??? Listen, we don't have to claim anything. I am only saying, don't drag us in your mess of an oxtail. We are not dumb to think we are the only ones that cook oxtail, but we know we do it the best, hands down. Thus, it is not a debate. Do not follow this up with a long ass response. Just carry on. You being a Jamaican don't mean a damn thing to me.

It’s a Southern version not French . Black Southerners have always made oxtails!! Caribbean people don’t have a lock on that. No more than the Jamaican way is more legit than the Trinidadian way. It’s just a different version from the diaspora of dispersed descendants of slaves. At each port we made it different with the ingredients we had available

I was eating this as a southern boy, LONG before I knew ANYTHING about Caribbean dishes… Y’all need to understand that we are all BLACK and cooking oxtails was derived from when we were enslaved… Since then, we developed different ways of cooking them in different regions.
