Ever heard of Oxymel? Ancient sources already tell of the amazing healing powers of sour honey, which was recommended for respiratory diseases and to strengthen Greek athletes, among other things. It was also valued in the Middle Ages. But then he fell into oblivion. Sour honey is now celebrating its big comeback.
Derived from the Greek terms sour (oxy) and honey (meli), it means something like sour honey. It has its origins in Arabic culture. Under the name Sekanjabin, it has been proving its worth as a universal household remedy for 2,500 years.
In China it is considered a remedy, in Russia it is the first drink after getting up: the medicinal drink Oxymel has been known since ancient times. Its main ingredients are vinegar and honey, as well as herbs or spices. The honey vinegar drink is also suitable for children. It is used as a remedy and tonic for numerous ailments and even helps to prevent many diseases. The drink has digestive, disinfecting, antibacterial and wound-healing properties, has a long shelf life and also tastes surprisingly good.
Even the basic ingredients honey and apple cider vinegar have healing and immune-boosting powers. The honey alone contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune and nerve-strengthening, digestive and sleep-promoting ingredients as well as strength-giving minerals and trace elements, vitamins, enzymes and amino acids.
Apple cider vinegar is also an effective food and medicine. Like honey, it also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory potential and a large number of valuable ingredients. It is used internally to strengthen the digestive and metabolic systems. Its balancing influence on cholesterol and blood sugar levels is highly valued. Externally it is cooling, antipyretic and decongestant.
These effects are enhanced by the addition of various medicinal herbs. They are selected according to the intended effect and area of application and prepared with the vinegar-honey mixture.
Oxymel is almost alcohol-free, tastes good on its own and can be taken very easily diluted with water or juice.
