OYFN PRIPETSHIK - A Yiddish Classic (Lea K & Rabbi T)

Oyfn Pripetshik (On the fire stove) is a Yiddish song by folk poet and composer M.M. Warshawsky (1848-1907).
This is a shorter version of the song.

There's a few reasons I find the song so powerful today:
It basically encapsulated the essence of Judaism.
We should look into the letters, the scripts of our ancestors, of our people, for we can derive strength in them.
Especially in todays world where change is constant, new things are thrown at us, there's chaos and social media overdose, delving deep into the stories of our forbears can give us a greater sense of purpose and connection to ourselves and the world.

It's sad, I speak yiddish, there's no native speakers anymore, I speak the Ulm dialect of yiddish. Its great, but mainly broad, I congratulate you on bringing yiddish to more people

There are actually many native speakers. They are mostly Hasidim. Try going to Williamsburg, Borough Park etc. in Brooklyn and you will see and hear native Yiddish all over the place

they do exist, I'm one of them. I speak to my siblings, mother, grandmother, cousins,... in Yiddish. I speak both dialects.

Quite the opposite. There are next to no speakers of the secular Yiddish left, but hasidic Yiddish is still growing due to the high birth rate in their communities, and shows few signs of this decline

This is beautiful! I was doing a search for something like this to use... I will be playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof this summer. There is a spot where the script just says "Tevye starts to sing a lullaby" but gives no words or music. I am going to learn a verse or the refrain phonetically to use. I think I only need about 10 seconds... I think it will be a nice touch. the sentiment is perfect for the scene (preparing for Sabbath). Though chances will be slim anyone would hear/understand it - even if there would happen be a Yiddish speaking person, the Golde character is talking over him at the same time. But it will satisfy my 'method acting' urge! Thank you and God bless.

So beautiful. I was, I suppose, just a little surprised how many non-Jews though that song was written for Schindler's List without realizing how old it is. PS Speaking of that movie: I found Yerushalayim shel Zahav to be jarring in black and white at the end of the movie instead of The Anthem of the Jewish Partisans (Zog Nit Keynmol). When the film switched to color I would have found Jerusalem of Gold entirely appropriate. Anyone else?

Beautiful. Do you do Rozhinkes mit Mandlin? that is another song my Bubie sang at the Shabbos Table. (I don't think she'd like your Aishes Chayal, but she'd note that you said "Hashem" at the end rather than the "full" pronunciation. Damn Good.
