Marty Byrde shows some balls and confronts KC mob boss Frank Cosgrove, after the latter's son and namesake hospitalised Ruth Langmore. Perhaps my favourite scene of the third season.
Ozark | Season 3 | Episode 7 | "In Case of Emergency" | All rights reserved to Netflix.
"The next time you see your son, he's gonna be hanging from a bridge in Juárez, you got that?"

That is because it is directed, focused anger. Not the wild anger that is like a bull in a china shop, damaging anything within reach. That anger is a MISSILE, and it was aimed at Cosgrove. Wild anger can be dismissed because it is impotent and weak; it is stupid anger. Calmed anger is anger coupled with intelligence, which makes Marty VERY dangerous.

What’s so painful about Ruth and Marty’s relationship is that Marty cares about her immensely, and he’s told her that before, but to her actions will always speak louder than words. This scene proves how much he cares, but because he didn’t show Ruth the same ferocity defending her that he did here, she resents him for it.

I saw that too. Good catch. My thinking into is I hope she learns to forgive because of not she’s going to be stuck living in hell. And that’s not what we were created for. And she knows that. Her and Marty are alike. They both are the humble ones in their family’s that have sacrificed the most. And they both don’t BS. I often wondered if she had a thing for Marty at first when she was just getting to know him. I mean she saved his life. I don’t know. We must forgive to be forgiven.

Marty is such a complex character. Because at times he seems robotic because he's not like other people. He's always analyzing his situation and acts based on primal instincts rather than emotion. But then there's rare occasions where Marty (who is already dedicating each day to keeping his family alive) branches out to burn a bridge with the KC Mob over Ruth. Because she's like a daughter to him. She's killed her own family for him and lost her father for the sake of the Byrde Family. What a a strong Bond.

As much as I like this scene, as much as it shows that Marty is capable of "taking it there" when he has to, it also illustrates that he didn't really show Ruth what she needed to see. Marty likes Ruth and has trusted her with a lot of responsibility, but in the end what she saw was that when his own daughter got a finger laid on her, Ruth's father died. Ruth gets beaten senseless and Frank Cosgrove gets off with a warning. Ruth needed action and Darlene gave her that.

This significance of this moment, even if it gets overshadowed by other pivotal scenes this season can't be overstated. From when they first met in season 2 all the way up to this scene Marty kept his head down and deferred to Frank whenever they interacted. Every single negotiation they had, even if it was on more or less amicable terms involved Frank intimidating or threatening Marty in some capacity, either with overt threats or just subtle menace. Marty kept his cool and appeased Frank's agression and alpha mentality because it just wasn't smart to make powerful enemies when everything was balanced on a razor's edge. This is first time we see Marty fully standing up to Frank as a man (there's a scene in season 2 where he snaps, but Frank still clearly intimidates him), and it's only because of what happened to Ruth. However, the true significance of this moment goes well beyond that. This is the FIRST AND ONLY so far moment when Marty, who has played to himself and others the role of a normal family man under duress in a criminal environment uses his influence with the cartel to threaten someone directly. The one minor exception is the scene introducing the Langmores in the first season, and the message being sent there was much more along the lines of "If you steal Navarro's money he's going to kill you." This moment is Marty acting and maybe only just realizing how powerful he actually is. He could have used his position with the cartel every step of the way from the moment he landed in Missouri. His influence and standing may have been much lower in the first season, but if he had said "Someone's threatening our interests we need to kill them." At any point the cartel would have done it without a second thought. He could have used them to intimidate businessowners into selling to him, he could have had the Snells killed the moment they threatened him and his family. He could have told Frank to kick rocks as soon as the KC mob started fucking with the casino project and Frank would have probably done it because while he's a regional crime boss the second largest mexican drug cartel (if you go by real life equivalents) is one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the world. Despite all this, he never did, both because he's a decent guy and because he never really considered himself a player in a criminal enterprise. He was just an accountant moving numbers around a page, and after that a man desperately trying to protect his family. This is the first time Marty ever says: "I'm a powerful member of one of the most dangerous gangs in the world. Back down or we'll kill your fucking family." He does it following a massive provocation, he does it to protect his loved ones but he also does it to a man that prior to his involvement with the cartel would have made him piss himself with fear. When you watch this, remember Frank is a career criminal who's likely seen violence all his life and ordered hits on dozens of people. Marty's an accountant. Frank probably never imagined he'd get alpha'd by a guy like that.

@@Overlijden1995 I'm a fan just like you and i liked your point of view. However I disagree with Marty being able to use the influence of the Cartel earlier to intimidate businesses. I don't think he could have used it. Most of the time he was bluffing as Dell really was more curious and didn't think he could succeed at first. Now I do think he has influence because of what he has accomplished. The thing I like about Marty is deep down he really is a humble guy even when he does have power. He's calculating, reasonable, has humility, and does try to do right by people even when they've hurt and betrayed him. His wife is the best example but also Rachel. She stole money and came back working for the FBI to save her own skin and Marty still got her out and help with her addiction. Sure His family comes first but that's everybody. His character is complex and humble. This scene here is a great side of him as well. It shows not only does he care but also stands up for people when he can

What’s really interesting about Marty is his intelligence. Him and Wendy could truly be unstoppable, and not just the state of Missouri but the entire Midwest. The entirety of season 3 all I seen from Wendy was her wanting more, until those last few eps of course. But that final scene of Navarro hugging them both is symbolic bc earlier Marty agreed with Wendy that they’re ALL IN. I’m so excited to see what season 4 has in store now that there are no restraints between those two.

Its problably going to be a war between Navarro and the Byrdes vs The Snells and Langmores vs Frank and the KC Mob. Maybe Darlene has an alliance at first with Frank and his mob but no way he lets what she did to his son stand for too long. S4 looks like it’s going to have even higher stakes with a lot more scheming and conflict happening in the Ozarks and Mexico. Johan will have a much bigger role in S4 I expect him to kill some people before the season ends.

Marty reminds me of Walter White, kind of quiet and no power in the beginning, but slowly starts killing that part of them and become scarier then any of the mob bosses/ cartel that they deal with

The ending for Ruth, imo, is Marty buying her a really nice house and sending Wyatt to college. Marty will go to prison and finally mirror the role Ruth`s dad played, a behind bars mentor figure.

I think what this show did so brilliantly is to build tension in Marty throughout the whole show and you just keep asking yourself when this dude is gonna explode inside..he hasn't exploded yet, but this scene is throwing shades at him starting to reach that point... I think they are building it for some intense transformation/events in s4 or finale. Quiet tension guys are the scariest when they explode since it takes so much to make them lose control, but when they do - oh boy... can't wait for s4

Marty should’ve sent a stronger message but not to the same degree as Darlene. He could’ve kept Ruth- one of his most trusted confidants- if he did. She was so essential to the business operation that even Helen offered her the job of managing the casinos if she were to overtake control of them from the Byrdes.

I wish somehow Ruth could have *seen him do this* because I think that, because Marty isn't demonstrative with his emotions, he probably downplayed it and just said "we talked to him" and so obviously she felt slighted- because she killed members of her family to protect him and therefore she felt like he didn't feel the same for her because he "only" stopped talking to/working with Frank. But if she could have seen how Marty FINALLY stood up to Frank, called her his family, and threatened Frank's Jr's life- which is something Marty LITERALLY NEVER DOES and hasn't done since- I think she would have gotten it and there wouldn't have been beef. I think he felt he had to downplay it because he always hides how close they are to one another- even and especially to Wendy- to keep Ruth safe, but I think that makes Ruth feel he doesn't care about her as much as she cares about him.
