I bought the Ozark Trail soft side, and enjoyed the 200$ left over. I'm a mail carrier, and it's summer here with temps in my truck routinely hitting 110 degrees. I can fill the cooler with ice monday morning at the start of the route, and when I get off of work tuesday afternoon, drinks are still ice cold. Couldn't ask for any better than that.

You should adjust the amount of ice to the volume of the cooler. For example, 1 pound of ice per quart of volume. Use any ratio you want, just keep it the same. That way you compensate for the volume difference and get much more of an apples to apples comparison. Great info though, thanks for doing the work for me!

Going on the 5th season with my Yeti Hopper 8 and I can say without a doubt that I’m glad I bought the Yeti. The durability has been great (front of a jetski storage compartment on the Great Lakes) and ice retention is amazing for such a small cooler. When this one is toast, I will be buying another one.
@zackdaripr5 ай бұрын
The ice retention may be similar. But the actual quality and life of the coolers just don’t compare when put against a YETI.

I liked the Ozark ones. I work in the oilfields, and they do the job as good as the Yeti.
@derektaylor28456 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing no one on the comment section has owned either. One simple test comparison is the zipper alone. The is no comparison. Yeti is more than worth it. The ozark is flimsy and weak. I've owned my yeti for over five years. It's just as good as the day I bought it. Tried an ozark. They suck. Zipper broke and plastic cracked after three months of use. If you are a very casual user get the ozark. If you use it more than twice a month pony up and get the yeti or if for NRA philosophical reasons get a compatible. They are def worth it.
@markjacobs62946 жыл бұрын
I spent gift money on the small Yeti hardside. I never use it because after putting a case of beer and 5lbs of ice in it weighs too much to deal with. Yeti is the most overpriced stuff on the market but if you want your beer stolen...buy one.

Great video, my only problem is the inconsitency with the temperatures. One box having something thats 124 degrees in it while the other has 129 is too big of a deviation, for all you know the extra or lack of heat affected the results I also reccomend you do them one at a time with a thermometer on the inside so you dont have to open it up every time
@outdoorzone6 жыл бұрын
I’m gonna state the obvious! The hard cooler is gonna leak when it’s plastic on plastic...if there was a rubber seal it prob would do much better. I own the same plastic cooler and it’s been awesome! Usually keeps ice for 3 days consistently in the summer. Thanks for video and test!!!
@reves746 жыл бұрын
At this point, there is no real benefit to the Yeti to justify the difference of nearly $200. Labeling the Yeti as the "high end," and the OT as the "low end" while comparing them in quality and function is no longer justified either. I had both, and once OT came out with their new version, I sold the Yeti. Other than the price, the biggest drawback to Yeti I found was that I didn't feel comfortable leaving it alone while on the beach or in the back of my truck.
@taylorwimberley16056 жыл бұрын
I agree to a degree, but you have to also consider durability. I think at this point in the rip-off other products race, a better test would be to throw them all off a bridge and see which one stands in the end. My money would be on the yeti.

The only reason we have these kinds of coolers today is because of yeti. They made an entire market. They put in the time and money to research and develop these coolers. All these ripoffs had to do was buy their cooler and copy it, without spending a dime on research and development. If they did, all they did was put their twist on a Yeti cooler.

Good test. For the hot water test the percent drops should be calculated by the following formula: difference between original and current temp of hot water divided by difference between original water temp and ambient air temperature. This is to account for the fact that the hot water will only ever cool to the ambient air temperature and not to zero. You will probably see that the water in the bowl will show close to a 100% drop rather than 43%. Results shouldn’t change much but may give a better magnitude/feel for the insulating capacity.
@bubblespoof9995 жыл бұрын
Arent you a little bothered he used a laser temperature measurement? He's essentially reflecting the surface heat of the cooler not necessarily the water temperature which could actually measure a little warmer than what he has. i mean it's pretty subjective, but the incorrect measuring device just bothers me so bad.

The only draw back to the yeti is with the handle being on top. Would that cause more wear on the zipper from carrying the weight of its contents? Possibly causing a leak?

Great point!! Yes i worried about this with my yeti hopper backflip 24(backpack cooler) but it seems the yeti zipper is so beefy nothing can harm it lol at least not yet but only a year of heavy use but looks perfectly brand new. Could be sold in a store id say its still perfect except the molle straps are slightly frayed from attaching the velcro straps on from the yeti sidekick dry case i have. Id say yeti should redo those straps to not be velcro on the yeti sidekick dry case to prevent fraying.

Having all that weight in there u think it will break the handle or maybe zipper as u stated but so far its just too beefy but we shall see in time. Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but assuming they don't, why don't they make coolers built like a "thermos" with doubled-walled vacuum insulation? I mean, you could make a standard cooler with the traditional/standard foam insulation or whatever it is, then outside of that make another outer wall with a layer of vacuum insulation ideally with something that would resist radiant thermal changes(as opposed to conductive ones). I assume such a thing would be tested as the concept is well known and established at this time; I can only think it's been tested and found to not make a significant difference increasing performance, or at least not enough to justify the added expense. But if it does make even a moderate difference it might be worth it to those who are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on a cooler(not me), but some people.
