The bike rides like a much more expensive bike. The downside of the $250 price tag is that the parts are not as durable. I would recommend changing out the freewheel first to get the gearing where you can have a 0.88 to 1 gear ratio. The 30-tooth front ring and 28-tooth rear, which is standard, only has a 1.07 to 1 ratio. For a person that likes to work on bikes it is a new project. Second part to replace is the rear derailer to one that is rated for trails. Shimano Acera is the way I went, but there are other options.

Falcon makes the FW-740 freewheel, its a 14-40t.

I did this exact upgrade for the mega range. It completely ruined the shifting. So much grinding and noise. Took it in twice hoping to get the grinding resolved. Didn’t help.

I rode mine for about 200mi in 75ish days before I gave up and returned it. Did little mods like new tires, seat post and seat, 44cm bar, zoom brakes. Just couldn't get passed the warped big cog on the front crankset. The last straw was the seized BB. Took it back in for a full refund towards something nicer. Overall it is a decent bike that targets the price point. It gets you outside and let's you tinker should you want too.

Wal-Mart is to good. Returned after 200 miles & 75 days. I wouldn't refund money.
