Sometimes you just have to get out and go solo to explore and find adventure. I take off in my Gladiator Rubicon on off road trails in the Ozarks that I hadn't been on in years and camp in 25 degree weather and have a great time! Just GO!

Thanks for the great video Matt. I need one of those diesel heaters. If you get time one day can you review those heaters you have. We tent camp out of our Jeep in a Gazel tent but now that it's cold wife is holding up the Jeeping kinda. LOL Thanks again we watch every video you post. Took the wife on a 14 day Jeep trip thru New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Colorado and back to Texas last month using Gaia, and Trails Off Road. 3600 miles we took 20 hrs of Gopro 9 4K video and over 4000 pics with the Canon EOS R. LOTS of memories! Thanks for all the inspiration to get outdoors.

My buddy and I were just out yesterday (Saturday) hitting the trails all around big Piney and seeing the iconic places like Bubs cabin and the school house. If you ever need a wheeling buddy that lives in central Arkansas give me a shout, I’m normally off Friday, Saturday, Sunday! (I know it would be to hard to ride with all your subscribers but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask!)😊

My biggest hurdle is distance. We have nowhere good to go locally. We are 2-3 hours from a good NF, and 5-6 hours from any trails or creeks with a rock in them.

Man I love solo wheelin- it is actually what I do mostly, or maybe just my son and me in the Gladiator. What keeps me from getting out as much as I would like? 1. Work- Trial lawyer and partner in a small firm. Hopefully only 10 more years though! 2. Family- I won’t call it obligations bc it’s not- given how much number 1 takes away from them already, I’d rather spend time with them than get on the trails if I have to make a choice. And there are a lot of times they can’t go bc of obligations. 3. Time and distance- all of my trails are 2-3-4 hrs from me. Tough to work in sometimes. 4. Energy- sometimes Im just too pooped from 1. to deal with 3. Lol. 5. Other interests- I also have other stuff I like to do- mountain biking and hiking and fishing (which can be combined with offroading), going to museums, boating, kayaking, seeing shows. Luckily I have a vaca home in the mountains of western Maryland, and we have an offroad state park (Wolf Den) 20 mins away and it opens up WV, western VA and western PA to easy daytrips. For this I consider myself very lucky. So between beginning of April and end of Oct we are there almost every weekend and out hitting trails. As a result of everything above my trips are mostly daytrips right now, but just got a Gazelle tent which should make overnights easier and therefor be able to do a few more Like I said, I also mountain bike and hike too. And we are blessed in the DMV (District Maryland Virginia) to have a plethora of trails and local parks, plus the Chesapeake Bay only 45 mins to 1 hour away, so there are lots of opportunities to get outside, get in nature, and get on trails, even if Oxblood only gets us there. We started Picnics in Pretty Places during the pandemic so if we don’t have a lot of time often we will just toss in the grill and stove, camp kitchen, and eating stuff boxes (everything else is prepacked and in the bed 24/7) and go do a picnic at one of our beautiful local parks- sometimes as close as the Rock Creek Park in DC proper, sometimes along the Chesapeake or Potomac, or sometimes in the Piedmont area of northern VA. Great way to still get outside, get in touch with nature, but keep it doable. Anyway, great vid. There is a river in Wav called Blackwater that I have a vid of on my channel with that same color water- where you shot this vid reminds me so much of western MD, WV, and western PA. And the little gravel road that runs along side the river is an old RR bed so you can drive a 2 wheel drive car along it. Love your attitude. Keep on wheelin it. Hmu if you ever got out my way.

So I wanted to let everyone know of your in a situation like mine where your 93 xj with 224k miles isn’t up to a 13 hour trip now there is an option so Amtrak offers a service you can buy a train ticket for you and your rig they offer a car service so when you arrive by train so does your vehicle and in many cases you can get really close to many trail destinations and it’s pretty reasonable cheaper than Fuel ATM lol I was gonna rent a U-haul car hauler and pick up 1k one way to where your at the train is way cheaper just a thought

My wife prefer 5 star European resorts, with room service, spa and 5 star Michelin rated restaurants. The idea of sleeping on top of a car, in a sleeping bag, rolling on mud all day, not having 40min hot showers and fluffy towels, fully serviced English breakfast with waiters wearing white gloves and fresh pastry’s, shocks her. Obviously that type of outdoor "rough" lifestyle is not for everyone and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Next holiday, she is going to lake como in Northern Italy and I am going to roll in mud and sleep on top of a car next to some miserable creek full of rubbish…

What's holding me back? Energy mostly, or the lack of it. I am on the transplant list with stage 4 kidney failure and still working full time over nights. Know a type O that would like to donate? Lol Other than that I try to get out closer to home when I can. I have a ford excursion that I'm slowly turning into an overland vehicle when time and money allows. It's huge but comfy enough for me, the wife and the wolfdogs. We hope to use it to travel the Pan American Highway in 5 to 10 years after transplant.

I leave at a minimum of 2hrs of drive before anything nice and I prefer to do 3 nighter type of weekends. That’s the only factor I need to factor in. I’m going out next weekend, it will be a 10 cm of snow trip 😎. Yes, diesel heater is the way to go. I push back that buy, enduring my wife’s harassment, she was right 😁.

What keeps me from going is making the 8hr drive and then being alone, not knowing the area other than GPS study and not having a winch. I do plan on going to the Oauchitas soon and just playing it safe. I work 7 days on 7 days off so I have plenty of time to explore. I do a lot of fishing and exploring by boat in South Louisiana

Did you get the diesel smell out of you drawer slide? Trick I learned from my wife many years ago. Vegetable oil neutralizes diesel fuel. I worked construction for 16 years and would get diesel fuel on my hands but one time I got pretty much soaked from my head to my ankles in diesel. Washed off with soap first to get the dirt off then covered myself in vegetable oil and scrubbed it around and showered it off with dawn soap after.

It’s hard to find trails close to New York City. Also, driving through traffic to get to the trails around the city can take hours. It sometimes takes 2 hours just to get to the Holland tunnel to go to New Jersey.

So I'll answer your question about why it's so hard to go out solo. I've got a WK2 Trailhawk that's armored up nicely, a winch, recovery and comms gear (ham/GMRS), a fridge, stove, a Gazelle T-4 and a cot (Can't sleep on the ground any more and a RTT is not something I could get into and out of) and all that. What I don't have are trails closer than about 4 hours away, and good ones 6+ hours each way. I live in NJ, near NYC. In NJ it's illegal to drive offroad almost everywhere and what there is is just basically dirt roads in a state forest with nothing much in terms of camp sites. The state is paved over almost completely, and there are 5-digit fines if you make a wrong turn. NY State and CT are also impossible to find offroad dispersed camping locations, and I just don't want to be in a government-run campground or a crappy private pay site 10 feet away from a group of goombahs being loud and irresponsible. Been there, done that. Any good trails are so secret that people will never tell you where they are or invite you out because they're afraid the state will find out and shut the roads down if they become known. So that means either the Green Mountain Nat'l Forest in VT (4 hours away, with about 60 dispersed spaces for the entire 20,000,000 population of the Boston-NYC population corridor), or 6-8 hours away in either the Alleghenny Nat'l Forest in PA, Bald Eagle State Forest in PA (mostly paved roads), or the George Washington Nat'l forest in VA. That's not a simple overnight getaway or even two days. And it's at least $200 in gas there and back. And the real problem is by the time you get there and set up camp, you're utterly drained of any energy from fighting traffic. My wife has zero interest in camping, so it's just 61YO partially disabled me and my Grand Cherokee, and my desire to be anywhere in the woods, but with no woods to go into. If I lived in a normal state I'd be out every weekend, but here, the hassle factor is so high that the bar to entry is extreme if all you're physically capable of doing is car camping. The government want to encourage hiking and backpacking, but they aren't factoring in us oldsters who just can't do that anymore and just want to drive up to a nice lake or riverbed, pitch a tent and sleep under the stars. Welcome to the northeast, mate.

Biggest impediment is that I don’t yet have the recovery gear to be smart going solo. BUT! I do try to go out on a few forest service roads and explore my local mountains as day trips. I haven’t camped in 4 years, we’ve been busy rebuilding our house after a wildfire destroyed our town. So that part about the idiots and their 🔥 really ticked me off!!! I have recently found a local group (2 hours away) that leads off road trips at least once a month. And they have a beginner’s trip on Sunday, so I’m going to go join them! I’m beyond excited! It’s nice to join in with a group leader that HAS the right equipment in case I get stuck.

Hey, Matt... one of the first things I noticed was the windshield... was going to ask if you traded windshields with Brad over at Trail Recon. He has an almost identical crack on his 392 now. Awesome that you got the windshields done... kudos to the guy who hooked you and Cara up. We do go out and wander sometimes, but living down here in south Texas, have a lot less public land to explore. You're truly blessed to have the Ozarks and Ouchitas in your back yard.

We’ve been Jeep camping all spring through fall. Now my wife says it’s too cold, the kids made her take them home in the Jeep while I stayed with the trailer RTT with the nice warm diesel heater. I want to go this weekend but I feel guilty leaving her alone with the kids… I could sit by the fire and in the warm tent all day/night.

April 1st is my first day of retirement and I will be able to just go and explore the USofA. Dedication to the job is what keeps me at work until retirement. 14:10 that has to be the most idiotic thing that a person can do when camping. This is what burns down the forests and gets trails closed to the public, it adds fire to the treehuggers to take away our lands for recreation.

What keeps us from going out: 1: new Bronco hasn't come yet and our F150 4x4 still needs attention, and 2: we have a special needs child who has seizures, and temperature extremes affect his seizures. So if we go anywhere, we either have to stay at a hotel or bring the "hotel" with us (i.e.: camper)

I, like most of us, go as often as I can after meeting all the other responsibilities that comes with not having the "coolest job in the world." I also am restricted because the amount of salary I can spend on gear works out to equal the amount of time I have to "just go!" It wouldn't make since to have all the gear I need and then not get the time to go at all cause I'm stuck working to pay for all that gear. Yes, I'd love to just drop everything and just go! But tonight I am resting from this week's working demands while you entertain me. Thanks for the escape!

I am thinking fear of getting stuck somewhere or breaking the vehicle…no by-pass around an obstacle…these videos are helpful in learning, but an “educational” series contrasting what you just did vs. how you would do it in a stock jeep (non-rubicon) and how you would navigate it with the previously mentioned concerns. Don't worry about a rooftop tent. A good ground tent like a Gazelle T4 is easy for one person to set up and take down--probably even faster than all but the most expensive RTTs. As for "ready", go to a few state campgrounds on your own to get the feel of how it will be when you're actually in the wilderness. It's great practice, and a in case things go wrong you can bail and re-evaluate. For the price of a RTT you could instead buy something that WILL save your life in the wilderness--a Garmin InReach Mini, plus a GOOD fridge, power bank (big EcoFlow fan here), JetBoil stove and a down sleeping bag...and with the rest of the money, pay for gas to go to fun places.

Ok. First and foremost, love your channel. I watch every episode, hit the like button and sit through the ads. Since you asked what's holding me/us back from getting out, I'll try explain and be brief. I'm glad I waited until the end to reply. I'm a young 52 year old. I used to have a stock '96 Jeep Cherokee that I "car camped" when I went hunting, fishing or just camping. It was pushing 200,000 miles, and the repairs were getting too costly, so I sold it. Now i drive a '15 Ford Fusion. I have general idea of what you're talking about of just getting out. HOWEVER! You initially came across a little off putting. You came across like it's so easy to do. I do not want to go $100,000+ in debt (from one of your recent episode). So I am a sub that lives vicariously through you and the other channels I watch. Again, absolutely love your content! Huge fan! Hope to meet you at Overland Expo in Loveland next year

Now a Ford Fusion probably won't cut it, but a used Jeep with a small lift and good all-terrains will take you almost everywhere. Drop about $2k in GOOD camping gear--buy once cry once as they say--and go hit the trails. Also, you can probably find that same XJ out there for $5k. You can't kill those things if you try.

@@W2IRT I'm fully aware of his point, and completely understand I don't need a $100k rig to get outdoors. Like I said...I've done the "getting out" numerous/countless times car camping in my Jeep. Again..I currently do not want to even go $10k+ in debt with your suggestion. He initially came across in the episode a little "preachy" about getting outdoors, expore..and why everyone isn't doing it. And...AGAIN ...I choose to live vicariously through the KZbin channels.

I travel for work so it’s hard to leave again on my days off. I do love to visit the Ouachita’s even with the 4 hour plus drive. My goal is a trip once a month but it’s been difficult.

Thank you very much for this video. I do hope a few people will finally choose to make the step to start camping any way possible. I am a use-to-could and enjoy your's and many other overlanding KZbinrs. One day I wish to gather all my necessary camping equipment I may still have (whether in the basement or my college kids' vehicles) and go out in my 1 wheel drive pickup (GO! Dodge Dakota!). Please hit this topic of encouragement every now and then. I hope more people will change their minds and choose to enjoy the outdoors. Thank you for this simple video of awesome views and encouragment to persue what you LOVE!

I will never understand the “when my rig is built “ people. Like you said you don’t need a “built” rig. Our first trip real time out we slept in the truck before we decided this is heaven. Then started building our rigs so we could go further and longer each time. As far as the snow I know the feeling everyone is getting snow all around us and not even so much as weather advisory in sight.

I wish there were a love button for this particular video! We moved up to NWA from SE Texas...I have camped all my life and now I have a decent 4WD Gen 4 runner and the Ozarks at my back door. I have been itching to get out but have used my lack of offloading skill and lack of recovery experience/gear as an excuse to stay home. thanks for the push!! I really do need to drive\um up the courage to just get out and explore! thanks for this video!!

Love your channel and I’m so so jealous of your adventures, hopefully one days I will be able to get out more, I have a lot of health issues which gobble up my sick time and most of my vacation days each year so any days left really doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room to go very far from East Texas lately.

I was spoiled growing up in CO and AZ, and camping all my life with my dad and brothers in the Rockies, the White Mountains, Four Corners, etc etc. Not to mention some awesome winter camping in Southeast AZ in the Dragoon Mountains and deserts. Living in TX now I keep talking myself out of going camping because "its too far and takes too long" to get to my old stomping grounds.... but your message in this vid reminds that there is a lot of exploring to do within a few hours of Dallas - including your Ozarks! Thanks for the reminder about the importance of being a Nike commercial... JUST DO IT!

What prevents me from 'just going'? Combination of work, and medical issues. Work is necessary for income of course. But 2 brain surgeries have made just normal day activities difficult. Much energy is expended at work, so leftover energy on weekends and holidays is about half as much as the average person - just a 'normal' byproduct of my surgeries and other conditions. Fortunately the VA takes care of most medical stuff and insurance from work is good so that is a major stress relief. So that is the purpose of my gladiator build (hoping to finish before this summer). It is not for extreme off road but should be able to tackle the Rubicon (a bucket list trail) without major damage. The intent for my build is to make going easier. Primarily designed around 1 or 2 night trips - which is all the energy I have except for a few special trips which are difficult, but worth it. So that I can simply pack food, water, clothes, and then go without having to pack everything every time.

What prevents me from going is Finances. If I take a day off of work I may not be able to pay my bills. Can’t risk it since I have a Child. If I didn’t have a child or didn’t have to worry about finances I’d probably live in a truck.
