Ozone is also used in the bottled water industry. That little empty bit in a bottled water is actually ozone. Just before the cap goes on the ozone is added to extend the shelf life of the bottled water. This gives the bottle of water about a year before it starts going stale. Without the ozone a bottle of water starts going stale in just a few months. 10 years ago when times were tough, I took a job at a water bottling factory.

In 2011 My Wife and I bought a used motorhome, sold our house and lived full time. Buying used I was prepared to make repairs and do maintenance. But, I wasn't ready for the mold smell in the bathroom. It seemed concentrated under the bathroom sink. I cleaned and cleaned and I even sprayed a layer of clear lacquer but the smell would not go away. It was a friend who recommended an ozone generator. It was pricey but IT WORKED, the smell was gone forever. We have pets now and it still works. Highly recommend. Excellent presentation and video "Zach Fields", thank you.

When I worked for Servpro, we were trained in using ozone generator's, as well as dehumidification devices to get rid of odors. We often had to clean furniture, and then place items in Ozone tents. The generators were also used in whole houses, to help eliminate odors after areas were completely cleaned, then isolated. They do work very well, but responsible use is paramount. @@DD-kn8ic Ozone fields extend into all parts of the home. Although concentration should be centralized for best application. Isolating areas affected by odor, should be thoroughly cleaned of contaminant before ozone generators are utilized. Fires in homes may need additional steps taken, such as structure repair if walls ceiling, or wooden members were damaged as a result of fire. If you are addressing smell as a result of mold and mildew infiltrating your home, have a thorough examination of structure in affected areas. Locate sources of contaminant, such as mold, which adversely affect your health and mitigate sources. Overlapping ozone devices in structures may be necessary, but generally used in a specific area that can be thoroughly isolated for best results. Ozone in concentration for extended periods, can build up to toxic levels if not monitored and kept in check. Venting of ozone from a room or home should be part of the procedure after equipment is turned off.

​@@ahmedkareem940 yes it will. If it was painted with a good paint like Kilz what you're smelling is not from the walls. It's in the carpet, ceiling, vents etc.

Just be sure to not run the generator indoors while animals are present. Ozone is harmful to living animals (humans included), so run the generator, then AIR OUT wherever it was used before returning pets or people in enclosed spaces. I accidentally turned on my generator while it was pointed towards my face and it is a pretty strong irritant. Smells like an indoor pool (chlorine i guess) but once its aired out all the odor is gone and youre left with a neutral odor.

Ozone itself is relatively odorless, that chloronated smell is the reaction to it battling contaminates. This is what I was told to tell people when I was an Ecoquest Alpine Air distributor back in the early 00's, to start the machines as low as possible when first using because the home environment is usually massively contaminated by volitile organics. After a period of time, depending on the severity of the contaminants, the air will smell fresh and clean, to keep the machine at a set level to maintain environmental freshness, that you will no longer smell the chlorine.

He states that ozone exposure has "no long-term effects" to humans, but keep in mind that ozone is highly reactive and is great at producing free radicals. These should be avoided as much as possible. Use the timer for an appropriate amount of time for your particular usage and wait at least an hour after the end of the cycle before re-entering the space. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Alex, thanks for chiming in. You’re absolutely right, while ozone can be helpful when used properly, it is nothing to mess around with. I wasn’t aware of how ozone affects the human body at a cellular level. Indeed, free radicals are bad news and should be taken seriously.

I totally did the opposite an hour ago. I made an ozone maker out of 2 industrial units that are rated 24g/h each. Usually the one in the video are not more than 5g/h . I went overboard making the 48g/h. Just completed an hour ago, tested it for 10 minutes. I stood in the toom doing deep breathing, hoping it will purify me internally. and oops..... 😵 . Yes coughing, and sensative lungs, and nausea.... I went closed the room, and did clearing breathing exercise for a while. I am fine, while writing this message.

According to EPA, "If used at concentrations that do not exceed public health standards, ozone applied to indoor air does not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants.". Furthermore, it is suggested that inhaling even relatively small amounts of ozone can cause sore thought, breathing problems like coughing, shortness of breath etc. My guess is better not to inhale it at all, if possible.

I know this is 5 months ago, but I would still like to say that I had an experience with mine... I thought it would be cool to use while working on my computer while it was running - BAD BAD idea for sure. After only a couple minutes, I found it hard to breath, and started coughing like crazy, and my throat became sore. I knew it must have been the ozone generator, and immediately un-plugged it. After about an hour my breathing came back to normal, and my cough and sore throat settled down. Wew!!. I won't be doing that again. Now when I use my ozone generator, I plug it in for a specific amount of time, and leave my home, and have not had any problems since I have been using it in that fashion. Hope this helps you or anyone else that may see this... I have been using an ozone generator in my home non-stop for over 20 years. I also use it in my car when needed and when I used to sell real estate, in many of those homes. While I understand the science behind it, neither my family, pets (my dog lived for 15 years) or I have have had any problems with it. As a matter of fact, my allergies are exponentially improved with an ozone generator.

We both had pets that were not affected. I can’t speak for the experience of others, but I can say that in addition to our experiences, many of the other Realtors in my office had them in their homes, too, and swore by them.

We used industrial sized O3 generators at work to bubble ozone through diffusers for water purification. It basically sterilizes the water by bursting any organic cells present in the water. It dissipates quickly with no residual odor. Ever smell the air after a thunderstorm with heavy lightning ?? That's ozone produced by the lightning charging the oxygen in the air. Smells fresh and clean. By the way, ozone is very corrosive in high concentrations. I've accidentally inhaled ozone on the job and wheezed for days.

I scavenged an ozone generator from a domestic refrigerator. It runs on regular AC power so I put a power cord on it and now use it to get the smell out of -not so fresh- refrigerators that we refurbish and sell. It works great!! In less than 24 hours it will entirely remove ANY odor that I have encountered, and believe me, I have seen the worst of the worst👃💩 LOL! Totally amazing and one of my niftiest tools!👍

@Kristina ohmy gosh that is one of the smells that will not go away with washing, with whatever. It only mosques the smell if you are lucky. And it comes back. We have had to exchange a number of times from it. What I do is nuke the interior for a few days with ozone. I have a couple ozone generators that I scavenged from another frig, and one more powerful old school unit made probably in the early 70s. Anyway it consists of nothing more than spraying a mist of water, not much, all over the interior then placing it on the highest shelf in the fresh food side, running the power cord through the hinge side gap in the door and closing it up. Wait 3 or4 days without opening, and when I do the odor is no longer there. Probably you could get one on e-bay. ? That's it. I guess also I clean out the refer with detergent and water and let it dry out first. That is the time when I know it will need the extra treatment. Works like magic.👍👍✨️

@Kristina OH-Wait!! If you look under my name, or I guess my 'channel' you will find my one and only video pertaining to the odor removal topic. It's a month or so old and I have yet to get a single view, and thus any feedback whatsoever. I wasn't expecting it to go viral. Only several minutes long. I see in my original comment I said "in less than 24 hours" but while it can achieve such a miracle, the time is subjective and directly proportional to the intensity. I am unsure about the results of multiple overnight treatments but I can only hope it will help.

Everyone had an ozone generator when I was a kid in the 60s/70s. We called them "Blacklights" and they were cool. In the immediate vicinity of a working blacklight (UV light) you have ozone being generated. The UV light photons strike an Oxygen molecule in the room (O2), breaking it apart into two Oxygen free radicals. Other Oxygen molecules nearby become the victim of the O free radicals, being forced to accept it for a short time (O3). Ozone is what you get when simple Oxygen captures UV light. Ozone doesn't protect us from UV light, it's the product of the protection we get automatically from our atmosphere.

Hey Zach! Thank you for these videos! I've heard that the use of these ozone generators can cause increased corrosion on metal or react poorly with plastic or rubber. Of course, the information out there needs to be taken with a grain of salt I feel (on both sides - the "never use" and "always use" camps). Anyway, if treating a room once, is there concern for equipment located in that room? For instance, in a basement situation, should there be concern of piping, electronics, plastic insulated wiring, etc? Or, is the degradation of these components mentioned in reports due to long periods (months/years) of constant exposure?? Thanks!

Thank you. This is a great video. I laughed, because it made me think of an Electric Vehicle. EVs cost a lot upfront, but maybe a better deal long term, because they cost less to operate, compared to living with an engine, spending money on fuel, oil, maintenance, and surprise breakdowns. And just like how an EV is expensive upfront, but will pay for itself in time. An Ozone-generator is a little expensive just to get, but will pay for itself in time, if you buy a lot of air fresheners and room deodorizers. And I imagine you just have to blow out an ozone-generator, or take it apart to clean it, and it basically lasts forever. I want one.

I've gotten srayed by skunks couple times on the farm and after I get rid of the skunk I take off all my cloths and put them in a trash bag and turn on the ozone generator for a minute then and tumble the bag and ozone again with the bag sealed. After that my cloths dont stink.

I am looking at a potential rental property that smells of cigarette smoke and I heard about ozone generators. Seems like a great solution to the problem! How big of a space is the one you have able to "treat"?

The manufacturer says this one will do 1200 square feet. I'd say the smaller the space the better. If you could go room by room and limit the space to say 200 sq ft that would be much better. It's all about getting a shock treatment.

I did run the generator in a couple of the rooms but I'm not sure if that's what did it or if it was getting the crawlspace encapsulated and dehumidified. I ended up retuning the generator as I don't really have a use for it. You could always ask the landlord if they can try ozoning the property or something!

I have this exact ozone generator. I've been using it since 2018. It's Effectiveness seems to have decreased a bit in the past year or so so I think I need to clean the corona. But otherwise it's been an excellent tool.

While looking up videos about ozone generators, I was surprised to see some videos about people intentionally going to "ozone spas" to have "ozone treatments" for illnesses such as chronic fatigue. In reading some of the comments, people said after getting "ozone treatments" they "felt like a million bucks," and "felt like they could run a marathon." Are these people lying?

Oh! And how to calculate the dosage 5000mg to 35,000 mg under what temperature and humidity and how long to run? Do you need to put it on a high place, bookshelf, ladders/scaffold with fans pushing up the heavier than air ozone for it to circulate everywhere? And have the intake part of the ozone box ducted to fresh air so that ozoned air doesn't pass thru the ozone generator again so that foul smell doesn't seep into walls, cabinets, everything and you have an unliveable house? Afterwards, does it have conversion time, where ozone breaks down to safe air? After airing out is it necessary to HEPA pfft vac and clean off the dead mold, mycotoxins and other pathogens? I know the questions but I don't have an answer. Nowhere can I find this info. Why?

Yes the car one is less the generator is epic. It really pumps out alot of 03. I'm just saying give the 03 plenty of air out time. It really noticeable when it hurts your lung.

I just got that machine on amazon too, to eliminate smoke smell. Crossing fingers if it is true as you say that it will kill fleas!! I am being infested (a cat and dog and even after flea dips and tons of spray and vaccuum and diatomaceous earth and traps and cleaning and cleaning and moving furniture out of a room and its empty except for fleas) it is awful like 5 jumping on my ankles when I stand in one spot. I ran this ozone machine after 20 minutes I am stunned how much fresher the bedroom smells but too scared to stay in there if a flea jumps on me. I forgot to take my plants out of the apartment and the bedroom door was open when I was in a hurry to leave and I am dreading that my plants are going to be doomed. I will get more if I can at least get rid of smoke smell and fleas. lol

Thanks for the information. Well descriptive. I remember being around an ozone machine years ago. I think we we're poorly educated on how much oxygen 3 air to breath in. I remember it was running a lot when I lived there. I didn't harm anyone but nevertheless I agree it's best not to be present when in use. Thanks again👍

Many ozone generators also have an ionizer feature - it's possible that was what you're thinking of - it has a clean smell, and it's completely safe to run while present, unlike an ozone generator

If you can smell ozone similar to a light chlorine smell and are exposed to it for a long time, it not only effects the lining of your lungs but it will also discolor your skin similar to Rosacea on your face, chin, and throat areas. You're absolutely right! For that situation, the carpets may still need to be replaced, but the house can be salvaged without too much cost or hassle. Also, many used car dealers use these when getting a car ready for sale that may have been previously owned by a smoker.

Yep this is pretty poignant. My house caught fire a couple weeks ago, and I'm in a hotel room right now. I've been trying to get this burn smell out of a lot of my stuff, but I've scrubbed it and left it in the bathroom with some odor absorber and an air purifier for a few days and it isn't doing anything. So the little one I bought I'm just going to throw in the bathroom, turn on the fan, maybe leave the odor absorbers in there and throw a towel under the door and just let it do its thing for a couple hours a day

It will kill you all if your in the building while it's on. Wait at least 1 hour before entering. It will also oxidize all the metal in your house.

@@juanosorno8153 Id simply tell them and set up a convenient time to run it a few hours. maybe do their units also during the workday to get the smells. This all really depends if your on a central air system or if the apartments leak into each other in any way. They can also simply leave their windows open while you do your apartment, the only concern is ozone in high amounts. It's naturally around us in little bits.

Yes, the removable plates do wear and require replacement every so often (depends on the amount of use).

@@crabtrap I know nothing about that brand or the plates they use, but no, that's not normal. I'd return it. The plates and machine should last WELL over 100 hours. I would recommend Enerzen brand. They are probably the largest and best known. I've never had an issue with them.
