"...I lost my way, and I blamed you for my failures..." what a beautiful monologue. how relatable is it that we as humans sometimes place the blame on those we love most in the world, pushing them away in the process. zac was a star in this scene, i'm always captivated when it comes about. very real, raw emotion.

Scarlet, before you go through this, I want to remind you of September 7th, 1988. It was the first time that I saw you. You were reading Less Than Zero, and you were wearing a Guns 'n' Roses t-shirt. I'd never seen anything so perfect. I remember thinking that I had to have you, or I'd die... then you whispered that you loved me at the homecoming dance, and I felt so peaceful... and safe... because I knew that no matter what happened, from that day on, nothing can ever be that bad... because I had you. And then I, uh... I grew up and I lost my way. And I blamed you for my failures. And I know that you think you have to do this today... but I don't want you to. But I guess... if I love you, I should let you move on.

I deeply understand the intensity of this scene. The part of letting go is the most difficult one along with accepting it. I truly loved a girl and we had moments where she loved me a little too but whenever she realised it she would let her guard up because of the situatons she was into. It was impossible for her to be with me. And when time had come that she was pushing me away, it hit me hard but I had to accept it and let her go. She is now married to someone and she is happy and I'm truly happy for her

This movie came out around the same time my parents divorced. VERY similar reasons. My dad is a Mike O’Donnell type, big shot in high school who settled down with a pretty girl (not the teen pregnancy part tho). And they divorced in 2010, 21 years after they married (1989 plays a big part in this too). And everything he just said is exactly what my siblings and I want to hear from my dad. I’m the youngest and I’m now in my mid 20s, but I’m still hopeful he’ll realize what he lost.
