In this video guitar lesson series we will take a look at one if the most popular classic rock songs of all time, "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne.
The guitarist for this song is the late great Randy Rhoads, a legendary guitarist who brought so much to the guitar world and influenced countless guitarists after him, only to have is life cut tragically short after just a few years in the public eye.
"Crazy Train" contains some of Randy Rhoad's most beloved guitar parts from the classic main riff to the dazzling fills all the way through the solo which contains melodic tapping, trills and fast 16th note triplet runs to create one of the most legendary guitar solos every written.
So go ahead and take a crack at learning this classic song and maybe you will be able to add a little bit of Randy Rhoads to your playing style. 🙂 Good luck!

I'm not here to bash anyone, but I have seen many songs that Marty improvises his own ideas and own interpretation. Often times, he doesn't mimic the exact thing the original composers do. This is very accurate.

This is so great, thank you. What I appreciate is the level of detail. I played this cover in the late 80s (pre-internet!) and I can see now that I simplified and missed bits like the open A to 12-fret A5 and the added note on the verse section. I suppose my version sounded ok, but those extra bits brings the song to a different level (as it should be).

I am confused that martysongs video is different from yours, and my ear is not good, problems start at the verse at 5:50 It seems to me that in the Marty video there are basically 4 1/16 notes picking and a 1/8 strum per chord in the verse. But you do something like follows? Chord A picking 1/8, 2 1/16 notes and 1/8 strum Chord E/A picking 2 1/16, 1/8 notes and 1/8 strum is this what you mean with backwards ? Chord D/A and A 4 1/16 notes and 1/8 strum And then E and repeat Is that right?

Lemme just say , if you have good ears, you'll notice in the original recording as the bass & drums count off the intro before the guitar begins , Randy flips the toggle switch on the guitar (my guess is he has the volume rolled completely off on the neck pickup - the position the toggle switch is at ) to the bridge pickups - just before the pick scrape . I guessing he is standing in front of the Marshall stack that was made for him , at a high volume - flips the toggle switch to the bridge pickup & the guitar immediately feeds back in a high pitch - THEN he does the pick scrape. Basically he's simulating a train horn . Either Randy was playing his white Gibson Les Paul custom or the polka dot Flying V - both guitars he brought with him to England from when he was in Quiet Riot .

Nice job, I find it easier and more accurate to play the E Major chord coming out of the opening riff like this. E|--0 B|--5 G|--4 D|--6 A|--7 E|--0 Playing this second position E Major places your hand only one fret away from the pre-verse riff which follows fast and it also sounds great.

Like I thought it was 3 strums of e then the first chord, 3 strums of e then the 2nd chord, then 4 strums of e then the 3rd chord, and then 4 strums of e then the 4th chord. Make sense?

That legato part he plays to finish the verse riff the second time is missing from your lesson, but thanks a ton for this excellent lesson :)

I can’t reach my pinky to the 5th fret :(

Just jump off with your fingers and hit it with your ring finger. That’s how I do it. I rarely use my pinky. When I do power cords I do the Kurt method😂🎸

Do you have to mute the A string before you play the chords to the verse ?, if so what’s the most efficient way of doing this.

Not sure if it’s technically right of me or not, but I find it easier to play an open A rather than the 5th fret of the E in the main riff
