I believe the pilot is Jeff Ethel. Sadly he passed in a P-38 crash a few years ago. Excellent video. RIP.

Excellent commentary from the Pilot. No doubt whatsoever this pilot is an EXPERT aviator. Just on his expertise in the nomenclature of this P-38 Lightning, start up procedures, and take off explanation. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful (and advanced) aircraft of WWII. A lot of people tout the P-51 Mustang as the greatest plane of WWII, but the lightning seemed to be a more "all around" versatile plane in both recon and fighting. It could really do it all. Most pilots called it the "Cadillac of the Sky" or what we would now call the "Ferrari of the Sky". It could fly faster than most any other plane, dog fight, ground strafe, take pictures, drop bombs, and do things that most other aircraft of the era could not. And that steering wheel design is gorgeous! Turn the wheel, plane goes that way, turn it back, plane goes back. It seems easier than a stick design but i'm not a pilot so I wouldn't know. I would say in beauty, this plane is on par with the Vought F4U Corsair with those swept back wings and incredible navy blue color they used on the Corsair's.

Great tutorial on the flying basics for this fantastic plane. I think it was the best twin engine fighter of its time. Such a capable aircraft.

My father Richard G. Taplin (Dick) flew one of these on recon, months out of a Minneapolis high school and then quick training in Miami, over the South China Sea in 1944. That experience, among others of a child of the Depression, made him - well - almost indomitable. RIP (1999). I am generally liberal and antiwar, but I respected his service.

I understand that a lot of the problems that the P38 had were with the reduction gear boxes. Also, maintaining equal manifold pressures was a challenge.

I wonder if the turbochargers are even functional in this particular P-38. These items are very complex and demanding of maintenance. Since they only fly at relatively low altitudes for aerial display, it is easier and cheaper to simply remove the turbochargers.

Annoyingly enough the late Lightnings automated everything and even took the overspeed lights off, so it's hard to tell
