don't know why but that is one of my all time favorite WWII warbirds...asked a pilot once about how it flew...he said it climbs like a homesick angel.

First thing I thought of. Terrible hearing an idling prop over the sound of the p38 flying

A very nice P-38 but very well put Mr.Ben Miz. It's next to impossible to get a true sounding because of the back ground noise or music getting in the way.

No ordinary P-38 this, but amazing reincarnation of the fire-breathing Reno racing plane White Lightning!! ...thank you
@easttexan29332 жыл бұрын
Too bad there was another engine running in the background that was drowning out the magnificent roar of the 38. And if one listens closely, one can hear the dreaded "air show music" playing in the background so paying customers cannot possibly get the full affect of the sound of the engines.

Nice video - when ever there is a warbird aerobatic show, why is there always someone running up another airplane so we can't hear the awesome WW2 aircraft?

It sounded like a Mustang in the background to me. I do agree that the only sounds we should hear is that P-38. I LOVE that engine sound.

Glad to see that old “White Lightning” is still being taken care off and flown!

Yep, flown by the legendary Lefty Gardner and before that, known as Yankee 25. Been crashed at least once because of an in flight fire while, If memory serves, being flown by Lefty's son.

I looked up the registration for the Red Bull P-38, and it's listed as a P-38L, built in 1944, which would mean it was originally built with counterrotating props. It also has the flat panel windscreen, which was also a feature built into the J and later models. But the radiator intake under the props are sloped, a design that was changed early in the production of the Lightening. This could be because the Red Bull P-38L isn't strictly a period correct P-38 as it has been modified for racing. Does anyone know more?
@zachboyd47492 жыл бұрын
She was originally known as “White Lightning” here in the states, one of the very few, if not the only, P-38s to ever race the pylons of Reno.

Turbochargers mounted atop the engines enabled rapid climb rates, increased its service ceiling, and even muffled the engines, with contra-rotating propellers to reduce torque. The P-38 Lightning could indeed fly fast-maxing at 395 miles-per-hour-and far (at slower speeds), up to 1,100 miles. These were designed by Kelly Johnson who went on to work at the Skunk Works and SR-71 fame. Prior to the turbos, the P-38 couldn't reach the altitudes needed. The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as the aircraft of America's top aces, Richard Bong (40 victories), Thomas McGuire (38 victories), and Charles H. MacDonald (27 victories). One more thing. My father served in the Philippines in WWII and my Mom was a "Rosie-the-Riveter". She helped build those P-38s and B-17s for good measure. A good friend of ours flew the Memphis Belle.

Super Video, eines der schönsten Flugzeuge, leider nur absolut störend sind das Motorengeräusch im Hintergrund und die komische Musik . Der Kameramann hat nicht verstanden, dass die Fans den Sound der p38 hören wollen, schade👎

I just hope the 60s soul music wasn't the choice of the videographer. It's bad enough the airshow people would think it appropriate, or even desired. Otherwise, nice to see the plane.

Something not kosher here. The P-38 Lightning had counter rotating propellers. This plane does not.
@Juno582 жыл бұрын
It's by the camera effect, same as in films sometimes car wheels seemingly turning backwards. At other videos you can clearly see this red bull lightning has counter rotating props.
@noahschwartz22702 жыл бұрын
@@Juno58 not here. Both propellers are turning in the same direction. Look at when they first start turning. I know all about shutter speeds making things like wheels or propellers look like they're turning backwards.

Perfect film were it not for the old Massie Ferguson farting away in the background for most of it. How many times have I had this miss-fortune at airshows, usually its some incessant whistling egg-beater going on another joy ride.
@John-nc4bl3 жыл бұрын
The P-38 was a superior beast to the old brit Mosquito as its climbrate was much better.
@John The stats have a sticking point though, the Allison engines preformed great in Southeast Asian Theater and in similar temps, but they did not do well in the cold and dampness of the European Theater. The Mossie, the Merlin engined Mustang, and Merlin engined Spitfire were the stars of the ETO. I believe I read the Mustang was first refused by the Brits, until someone got the idea to shoehorn a Merlin engine into the plane. I was the last " non pilot" to sit in N25Y, a dream come true. It was going to cost the Gardner's somewhere in the neighborhood of $400,000 to get her airworthy and Lefty's health was declining. I'm glad Redbull stepped in and Ezell Aviation did a wonderful restoration. I would have been much happier if she had remained in her red, white and blue livery, though.
