At 1:10, maybe the best P-51 takeoff on KZbin! The buzz of the 4 blade prop and those 12 cylinders makes Merlin Music:-)

Love the P-51 but many a Marine pilot would say the F4U Corsair was the finest fighter used during WWII ... Many a Navy pilot would swear by the Hellcat ... all awesome aircraft that did their part in keeping the US free ... Not taking anything away from the Spitfire, the P-38 Lighting or the P-47 Thunderbolt ..
@nicholasdivitto463311 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by the Packard Merlin being an original design. It is an ordinary Rolls Royce Merlin engine produced under license by Packard. Packard did make some improvements, but it is largely the same engine
@wilburfinnigan214211 жыл бұрын
Gretchluver1 They were "Packard Merlins" which is their official name to differenciate them from the Rolls Royce built ones. But the Brits trying to claim them refer to them as Rolls Royce. Even the Rolls Royce site lists the "Packard V1650" as a variant,that means different. Yes the Packard V1650 was a Rolls design built and updated in the USA. Britain was hard up for engines in 1940 and came to Packard to have them built.

You have to agree that the P-51 was amazing plane..but as the "Most Romantic" there can only be one true candidate and that would be the Supermarine Spitfire. OK the Hurricane was the best ratio killer in the Battle of Britain and the success of the P-51 flying into the heart land of Germany... You can never take these attributes away from them.... But for me the Spitfire is the Holy Grail of WW2

jam2music Boyington flew the Vought F4U Corsair in WWII. A carrier capable aircraft that was not as good as the P-51D in some ways, and a better aircraft in other ways. Please tell your father thank you for serving in the Korean war.

lander4545 It would be hard to imagine that a new set of engineers that were given plans to work from wouldn't have made changes. and improvement. Hell when I was younger rebuilding Sb & Lb Ford engines they NEVER went back together the way they came apart. Cams carbs ignition headers were all changed to "Improve" them. And I was a Backyard" mechanic.NOBODY will ever convince me that Packard didn't make changes. Its not the nature of the beasts to leave them alone.everything can be improved.

nicholas divitto Packard when it received the plans found them to be incomplete. Packard redesigned and upgraded the engine. Main bearings supercharger induction systems heads. So it originally was a British design Packard developed it for mass production. So it is considered a different design.Google Packard Merlin. They built 55.000 of them and FORD of England built another 33,000 of the modified engines. It is not an ordinary Rolls engine. Most agree it was better.
@mikejohnson72028 жыл бұрын
That is not a Rolls Royce Merlin, it is a Packard V-1650-7 built in Detroit.
@emersoncaicedo31466 жыл бұрын
Mike Johnson Merlin or not, the design is still entirely British...... It is a British engine! Not an American engine...still a Rolls Royce Merlin.
@emersoncaicedo31466 жыл бұрын
soaringtractor still a British engine... Besides the Packard Merlin would have NEVER existed without the British Merlin.. Fact! You are silly if you think that the Merlin is American because it's not...

@rpr6.5 creedmoor I'm well aware that the designer of the p51 was Edgar schmued. That has nothing to do with the engine.

The markings are of P-51 flown by Col. James "Goody" Goodson. Jimmy was an Eagle Squadron vet and the 336 FS 4th FG commander out of Deben, England. They show his final confirmed score of 30 killls. He was shot down shortly after D Day strafing a Me-163 and made a POW. The "Spam Can" is totally a museum add on though. Most of his a/c had a diving eagle over a USA star as nose art. Had the great fortune to work the airshow circuit with him for a couple years.

chrisburger The Mustang WAS NOT a British design. Brits came to North American Aviation to have them built the P40 and NAA refused and offered a better plane which was the Mustang, It was built to fulfill a British order not design, The first Mustangs were the British Mk I & MkII which were Allison powered, Merlins were in short supply and could never have been used as the Mustang was Built in U S A and the Merlin were built in Britain AT THAT TIME. Later in "42 the PACKARD built Merlin was installed in the B/C models and later the "D" model. The production Mustangs NEVER had a British built Merlin installed. ALL MERLIN in P51 B C D H and British equivilent MK;s had the US BUILT PACKARD improved and further developed Merlin installed by NAA in the U S A...Do some research and quit spouting shit you know nothing about.
@wilburfinnigan214210 жыл бұрын
Better do some research son Packard made hundreds of "Improvements" to the Merlin. There were over 18 MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the Brit version and the Packard. Packards were more reliable and did not leak oil and used American thread and bolt sizes> Same? NO Similar? Yes
@MarsFKA8 жыл бұрын
+chrisburger This is Little Wilbur Finnegan, who knows everything there is to know about Packard and the Rolls Royce Merlins it built under licence and never fails to tell the world how proud he is of his knowledge. He also never fails to let the world see his utter contempt for anyone with a a different world view. That is why you received gratuitous abuse instead of a reasoned discussion. Little Wilbur stars on a lot of aviation videos on KZbin and when he is not making a laughing stock of himself, he is occasionally quite funny.
@wilburfinnigan21428 жыл бұрын
MarsFKA Do the research !!! I might suggest you look up on line the book by Robert Neal "Packard as an Aero engine builder, Packard Merlin, and learn what really went on from the peoples notes and diaries that did the work !!! Did you know the plans RR sent over with the 2 sample engines were not complete?? Missing tolerances, drawings that did not match the parts, no torque specs for the fasteners, and they with held info on the supercharger drive on the single stage supercharger??? No info on the 2 stage supercharger???Most all the engines ordered were the single stage versions for the Brits, and Vincent built his own 2 stage 2 speed supercharger as most all of them were for the Mustang !!! and yet they expected Packard to build engines for them that matched their quality!!! Jesse Vincent did fill in the missing info and built the engines !!! Do you also realize that the Brits only paid for the first 6,000 engines purchased ??? Us government paid for the other 31,000 engines shipped to the Brits, providing them under lend lease??? Of which the Brits up to 50 years later paid for at 10% of their value ??? Like I said...do the research and do not rely on the British Bullshit they are feeding you !!! The arrogant Brits were embarassed that the "Greatest nation" had to ask for help and they tend to down play what went on to make themselves look better but the truth is different, without the USA's industrial might the Brits were screwed, would not exist today, and they cannot swallow that large pill of humility !!!! Just the facts and no Brit Bullshit !!!
@MarsFKA8 жыл бұрын
Wilbur Finnigan That was a waste of effort on your part, Little Wilbur. I wasn't criticising the extent of your knowledge, but the undisguised contempt that you have for everyone in every thread that you appear in on KZbin. If you weren't such an obnoxious turd you would find that people take you more seriously than they do now. The way that you conduct yourself now, you are no more than a laughing stock.

MarsFKA I started out several years ago with this little known info and the Limeys hated the truth started the name calling and such just like you last triate !!! so the gloves come off, no more Mr nice guy !!! I just keep the info coming showing all the lies and Bullshit being told out there and when somebody starts the name calling, derogatory remarks I know I have won once again because these comment show they have no real info for a come back and have to resort to name calling to try and protect their arrogant egos !!! just like the info above you simply dismiss it with not checking it out !!! Suggest you check it out before further embrassing yourself !!!
