My father serviced P51’s as aero engine specialist during WWll with the RAF after working Spitfires and Hurricanes. He served in France (pre invasion), B OF B, Africa, Malta, France ll, Belgium. Continued in Canada with the RCAF Reserve at Mount Hope and the Heritage Museum there maintaining an airworthy P51 on display. When Ford introduced their iconic version in 1964 1/2, he bought one. He truly loved that aircraft and that car. Us 3 kids were in our early teens then and could barely fit in the small back seat. We forgave him for that! I have a treasured photo of him in the cockpit of the Mount Hope P51 as he was taxiing it out of the hanger after servicing. Thanks Dad.

55 secs in and I'm already impressed with this pilot. I worked airshows for yrs even joined Army Aviation Heritage Foundation and traveled all over performing in airshows. People let me tell ya it is an ASS LOAD of work and very very few get paid. We all do it for the love of flying and the history behind it. In this vid that kid at 00.55 is most likely a Civil Air Patrolman who volunteered to work all weekend in the hot sun and for free. He also showed respect to the pilot in the P-51(Notice the salute) Now I can't tell you how many times I've seen these hard working volunteers get ignored. I'm in no way saying it was ever intentional but it happens a lot. I just thought it was really cool that the pilot returned the respect shown. That kind of treatment goes a long dam way with volunteers.

I used to work at a private charter service. Every summer we had a warbirds show put on by the Confederate Air Force. A few days before it started, this older man came in and asked to see the show. We informed him it was still a few days away. He then told us that he served in WWII and showed us his War Department ID. Someone asked him what he did in the war and he said he was a P51 pilot. We were like “have a seat sir” and offered him some food and drinks. He said one time he was being chased by two Messerschmitt BF109s. He said they were firing at him so he was zig zagging to avoid their fire. He dove down among some trees and finally lost them. We told him when he comes back for the show to not go to the gate but to come to the office and we would get him in for free. It was around 27 years ago and I still can remember what he looked like and his War Department ID.

P51 fun fact (I learned this from Kermit Weeks' pre-flight inspection of his P51D): the radiator and oil cooler under the aircraft get so hot when flying that the air passing through the coolers is heated and expanded to the point that it comes out the back as a small jet thrust. This thrust is enough to cancel out the aerodynamic drag of the radiator and oil cooler.

Around 1964, we were flying model planes in a contest just outside of Houma Airfield in Louisiana. There was a rich oil guy who had a bunch of WWII planes he had collected, restored and flew, Among them a Bearcat, a Hellcat, a P-40, and a P-51. He decided to give us a thrill I guess, and buzzed the field just as this kid released his plane. The next thing we knew it was raining tissue paper and balsa wood. And the Mustang did a quick turn and landed back on the airfield. The people running the model plane event were not amused and went to the airport to complain. They learned that the prop on the P-51 had a ding in it throwing it out of balance. I guess the guy learned his lesson, because that never happened again in subsequent events.

I believe this airplane was a cooperative effort between the United States and the UK during WWII. It was a U.S. designed airframe with an upgraded British Spitfire engine. They needed a fast fighter that could fly long distance to protect U.S. bombers at high altitude. The P51 did it all.
@mikehcomcon57006 жыл бұрын
That's correct. We needed fighters with enough range to accompany bombers (not just US - ours too: US AIr Force used to handle the day bombing, while RAF did the night-bombing over Germany). They needed to fly all the way from England to Berlin, and back, and nothing before the P51 had the tank capacity to make it. Huge credit to North American Aviation, that when asked if they could show a prototype in 150 days from order, they did just that. Original flew with an Allinson engine, which was fine at lower altitude, but had lesser perfomance at high altitude, because of only a single-stage supercharger. The Rolls-Royce Merlin engine had a two-stage supercharger, so could still blow the carburettors hard even at higher alititude with thinner air; and as soon as the Merlin was bolted into the P51 it became the perfect fighter. Merlins then built by Packard under licence in the US. The P51D imho is THE most beautiful flying machine ever built bar none. Note for Americans here: if you are ever in London, do take a subway (tube) out to Hendon (~30 mins) and get a taxi from there, over to the RAF Museum Hendon. A wonderful place, huge numbers of aircraft on static display, and entirely free to visit. If you're there in the morning, ask also about the 'Graham-White Factory' on the same premises: it's a stunning collection of First World War aircraft and engines from the days of leather, spruce and canvas - and bombers, where crew literally dropped the bombs over the side with their bare hands.

For the Allies never conceded a need for a escort fighter till 1942/43 will after the P 51 come in to service . so it found it self sort to role by chance and on after some modification lead by the British also the USAAF was not interested in P 51 till after it entered the war and as for which was the better dog fighter will the the USA flyers that flew both, have said yes the P51 had the legs to get you to fight but you would want to fight in a Spitfire when you get there

Zero 雪 I was talking to my lady's dad yesterday, and he was in a P51 a few months ago as the passenger, when some flaps stopped working mid flight. They landed successfully by radioing in that they needed to come in hot. All the runway was used with a couple feet to spare. You take a chance with life using these old relics. It's too bad this plane crashed. I wouldn't get in one.

I have experienced a P51 from a distance a little further away than the one in the fly by here. To get a better idea for the listener reading this turn the volume *all* the way up, put a hair dryer in front of you from about 2 feet away and turn the heat setting to high. Put a big fan about about 4 feet away from you and set that to high. As the plane flies by in this video turn them both on at the same time and you will get an idea of what that experience is like. You can literally *feel* and smell that aircraft is it blows past you. Just a magical bird. In real life as it approaches you can barely hear it, the only time you know its even there, I can only imagine on a battlefield anyone who wasnt paying attention wouldnt know the P51 was even there until it was too late. Very easy to get a drop on an enemy with that aircraft on a surface attack, truly a magnificent versatile aircraft only the Me109 was the better WW2 aircraft.

Ah the sound of a Merlin - not quite the whistling death of an F4U in a dive but I like it.
