A gentleman from Milwaukee has one and he would fly over Edgerton, Wisconsin, (25 miles south of Madison Wi), because he knew a WWII veteran who actually flew one during the war. He would also fly it over the golf course really , really. low whenever he was there. I will never, ever forget the sound that plane made. You could hear that thing coming towards us a long, long ways away. He would fly over course like 3 or 400 feet above us. God reverberations that you could feel. Something you can never forget. God bless our veterans, we love you and thank you.❤❤❤ thank you again.

The silver is the bare metal aluminum. The stripes are to tell other Allied pilots the aircraft is a friendly after too many others were shot down by friendlies because their silhouettes were so similar to German aircraft. By that time the Allies had air superiority and didn't need camouflage so the grounds crew would remove it using gasoline to reveal the bare metal. It also helped increase airspeed a few knots. Can you imagine being a German and seeing hundreds of silver aircraft flying over your city and not one of yours flying to defend you?

Exactly! Does anyone else have this problem with their local airshow? I go to Wings Over Houston and every year and every year I get a survey asking me how they can improve the show. Nine years in a row now I've pleaded and begged them to tone down the music and SHUT UP! I don't understand why anyone involved with aircraft would think their narration of novice level details with news anchor style banter is more interesting than the audio experience of the aircraft we came to enjoy.

In 74 you could get one out of Davis-Monthan for 55k. By the time i got home, what was left there was 250k. And that was my dads regret because he knew that was my dream. THAT, SIR, is arguably the best demonstration of a P-51 I have seen in my 61 years since becoming conscious that aeroplanes existed, back when I was 6 years old!. The cherry on this cake is most certainly the sound. Superb, absolutely superb. When all the circumstances come together, I shall ensure that my 8 year old Grand, Ryan, (yep, his Dad has octane for blood), has the experience of seeing and hearing this as he stands on the apron beside me. No holding up any damn electronic device to record, no bloody pussy-arsed protective earplugs or earphones, his brain and memory is all he'll need, as I did way back in the late 50's, when I saw and heard my first Mustang, here in Australia, for the first time. I've seen flying like that in the UK many times. Buy a map of Britain, find Cambridge on it and look for a nearby place called Duxford - about 9 miles away. They have a few airshows every year. I went to a show there where 15 Spitfires flew together in formation - with 3 Hurricanes in support. It's a marvellous place if you like the sound of piston-engined aircraft. There's also an airworthy B17G based there too, 'Sally B' which displays regularly during summer and has a Supporter's club. 'I'm a 23- year member (up to now) and have been on board a few times during static displays.

Thanks Steve! Now my head is too big to get through a door! Actually, when I shot that one in particular, I knew I had it. No announcer, the Doppler effect as he did a 180 turns under power very near, the right amount of clouds in the sky, a sole P-51 for pure sound, and of course, Scooter's great "Bob Hoover style" performance. That sound goes right through you doesn't it? I have another video that I'll be releasing in a few days that was shot at Duxford Airfield in 2003. It's of a mass takeoff with Spits, Hurricanes and others taking off from grass and passing right over my head. If you subscribe you'll should get a notice. Thanks again! Steve

@@WarbirdVideos already subbed!. seriously, the sound and camera clarity and stability is perfect. the display itself is professional. the mustang for me is on the same par as the spitfire in elegance and design beauty, but she has the edge of the gun port whistle to stoke the fire further!. the merlin, of course, is the music that raises neck hairs!!. 40'S warbirds should never die, whatever country made them, they have the right to still dominate the sky. look forward to seeing your other videos to try top this one. fantastic.. regards..

Actually, the Grumman F-8F-2 still holds the climb record for piston engine, propeller-driven aircraft, and had a better roll rate, to the best of my knowledge. It was flown by the Blue Angels in the late '40s before they transitioned to jets, with the F-9F. But the Mustang was damned close to it in performance, and probably a bit faster at any altitude. And the Bearcat had no where near the beauty or mystique of the P-51, in my opinion.
