The Tie Fighter strength would be to take the fight in the higher vertical altitude where the P-51 can't operate and stalll , but the tie would be valunable to the P-51 guns, however Ties are too fast and i doubt a P-51 would even catch a tie in it's gun sights!! ties aren't areodynamic so it's gonna be pretty slow and also, I doubt that the ties will have a very good time trying to hit the p51s because the blaster cannons fire some pretty slow projectiles if you compare them to bullets and missiles

the tie fighters are desighned to take blaster fire not solid projectiles because lets face it, in the star wars universe, unless yer fighting sand people on tatooine, u aren't gonna find projectile weapons a whole lot

slug throwers in star wars are worse than modern day weapons if you think about it and my point is that the empire is about cost effectiveness. slug throwers in the star wars universe are even worse than the glock 17 and are extremely rare. that's why the tie's armor is designed to resist blasters. also, plastoid armor is basically a suit of plastic with some rubber inside of them and is designed to resist heat not kinetic energy. that's why the ewoks were able to punch the shit out of the stormtroopers in endor. and besides, there are many flaws and weak points in alot of the armor and viechles that the galactic empire uses so it wouldn't be surprising if a single bullet hits a weak spot and rips off a wing or kills the pilot or blows up the engine etc. And also, the tuskan rifles are basically 16th century muskets so yeah slug throwers in the star wars univers can't do shit.
