First flight of my dad's 2/3rd scale Mustang. For the actual takeoff go to 6:30
The Mustang has been his favorite warbird since he was a boy. He started working on this airplane in December 1994. After building the airframe he purchased a Corvette LS-1 engine. There have been many hurdles to get everything ready, but after 16 years and over 5000 hours of building, he finally got to fly it! The 'crazy' woman full of enthusiasm is his wife.

I have to say this is one gorgeous bird! The sounds of that LS-1 engine, has to be churning out at least 325 hp, or more. Congratulations on a long and hard working accomplishment. I admire and respect a man that sets his sights on a dream and stays with it to completion. Thank you for sharing a tidbit of your pride and joy.

+Bobby Tucker Lowest powered LS1s were 335hp. With minor mods (including those super shorty headers), it's not hard to get to 400hp. No matter, I'm sure it's a ton of fun in that small frame.

FYI, your burban engine is an LM7, LQ4, or LQ9, depending on year or trim. Same family as LS engines with the biggest different being the intake manifold, cam, and block is cast iron, not aluminum. I would assume this guy used aluminum block for 120lb weight savings over iron. The iron engines are high 200s or low 300s in hp, but high 300s in torque, depending on trim/year. Ya, it's not a super machine in your 6000lb truck, but it'll definitely wake up a 1500lb, single seat airplane! lol.

GM did put the LS-1 in many suv's....and some cars. some monte carlos had it....but they burped it down in HP....they didn't want another car or brand passing the Corvette....remember the Grand National? yeah, GM really got down Buick's throat for that, thats why there will NEVER...EVER...EVER be another Grand National...or one like it from any GM brand...EVER again.....GM will be DAMNED if they ever let any of their other cars be faster or more HP than the vette

Such an incredible story and homage to arguably the greatest fighting aircraft in history. My Uncle flew in the 351st Fighter Squadron during WW2 and had dozens of missions in the P-51. He started in training with P-40, etc., then got the Mustangs when he went to Europe. He upgraded to the P-51K 44-11565 JY which he flew through the end of 1944 until his final mission on 02/24/45 when he was actually flying a fellow pilot's A/C "Mr. Gary" 44-14949 because his a/c was in for repair from anti-aircraft flak the day before, in which he had Ground Looped in France. My Uncle, 1Lt Raymond Hilgenberg was KIA on that mission in "Mr. Gary" after a very successful escort and strafing mission over Germany. Once again fuc8king Nazi flak hit his plane and before he could make it to friendly territory he lost the plane...and his life. Anyway, I tell his story whenever I get the chance because he was a hero, with Nazi kills and 41 missions. He was just 21. So, back to this 2/3rd Mustang, I love it, as would have my uncle, I'm sure. Peace.

Last year, while sitting in Township Park in Geneva on the Lake ,Ohio, looking out at Lake Erie I heard a loud roaring coming from my right . Before I could get my phone camera out two of these came flying right in front of us ( me and my wife ) . They were so low we could see the pilots. IT WAS AWESOME. I described what had happened and posted it to Facebook. I got a reply from a person in Erie PA. that said there was a rumor of a husband and wife that flew these two birds out of an airstrip somewhere along Rt 90. It was a great experience.seeiing them.

That man knows his stuff. You can tell he's deliberately trying to contain his excitement by performing all the pre-flight and run-up in a very professional manner. Does all the in-flight characteristics checks then greases an absolutely perfect landing in an entirely unfamiliar aircraft. When you work that hard and long to fulfill a dream you deserve nothing but complete success. Kudos to the gentleman .... and his very supportive family.

Gobs of kudos to your dad, and congratulations, also. Damn what balls! You got 'em, Mr. Hoyle! It also made much common sense to install that Corvette engine in her; even though the original engine would have in no way fit, of course, they could be very finicky, and just completely stop. Again, a beautiful plane, sir. Hello to the clouds from me!

My late Uncle, career fighter pilot (35yrs USAF) Retied Colonel Ewald Glenn Kruggel flew the P-51 almost right out of high school. Him and his buddy would take his buddy's dad's crop duster and buzz the high school for kicks in Beaumont Ca....so...he had the right stuff. Back then if you could fly a plane...you became a USAF Pilot. In the 70's he would do a speed pass over our house in Cucamonga in his F-4 Phantom to let everybody know he was back in town.....sounded like a missile about to impact....never took out any windows though. It made the news. Bought a Decathlon when he retired and took me flying and golfing once a week for a long time out of Redlands Ca. This while building an R-V 4. He fashioned an air scoop (oil cooler) like the P-51's between the mains just for kik's. If you research his name you'll find his history. Named my youngest son after him....a great pilot, story teller and gentleman.

Walter D Wormack Why not go 'the extra mile' and build it in the same Scale as the original? Engine too expensive?
@HavenMade
@HavenMade 8 жыл бұрын
A full scale bird is extremely expensive. The biggest kit build you can find is a 3/4 scale Thunder Mustang which will cost you $750k. This kit build was a 10th the cost with the engine. The labor is "priceless".😀
@TheRobertSt
@TheRobertSt 8 жыл бұрын
Mark Hoyle oh, well. I certainly did not know that. Why, ultimately is that so? The materials for the airplane must be a bit higher. But just only a bit. The engine? Maybe that then..?
@bogomir67
@bogomir67 8 жыл бұрын
TheRobertSt The materials cannot be just scaled up - the load and stress rise with scale more steeply than linear. As in double size means 4 times the surface area, etc. As for the engine, the originals were RR MErlins build by Packard, right? Those are extremely rare (at least in any airworthy condition).

It's a homebuilt aircraft. Not a real mustang and only 2/3rds the size. If it's a thunder mustang brand it has a smaller v12 in it if it's a different one it's got a chevy big block in it. This one sounds like it's got the Chevy big block v8

You should invest $100 bucks in a generic off the shelf backup for cars camera system available from practically anywhere. Mount the screen in the cockpit, and the camera pointing forward under the nose, so he can see while taxiing...

Seriously, the vid was OK for taxi but they needed something in the air to fly along side of it and a cockpit cam wouldn't hurt.

My mom's car has an aftermarket backup camera my sister bought her for Christmas. Is a warbird pilot too damn dense, spending 50 grand on his glass panel cockpit alone, not to think a backup camera couldn't help him see past his big fat fucking nose of his rich ass fucking toy while taxing? It's self evident... No, I'm not a girl, I'm a chopper... choppergirl.air-war.org

CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR Little over the top, aren't you? :) I think Dorothy is GREAT! I wish you the absolute best with her. While I agree that a 'backup camera' would be a great addition to a tail dragger, not everyone really knows about them, or thinks about them for this application. So, you're a head of your time, okay? Be cool, teach others gently.

Thanks for sharing and best of luck on all of your future endeavors! Very cool. Sure would like to know some more technical specs. I would say t he best looking WW2 plane, Vought F4U Corsair or the best piston driven WW2 plane FW TA-152. Last one would be great if he would build it with a Mercedes Benz M120 V12 engine as Kurt Tank preferred a Benz engine instead of a Junkers Jumo V12. Still prefer the Corsair...... She's so pretty! :)

Mustang: How can this airplane be just a model ? It sure as anything, looked like the fully restored REAL thing. The only thing that gave it away, was the modern "strobe" wing tip lights. I don't think that these lights existed, when the ORIGINAL, Mustangs were in operation. Thank You, so, very, very much for this exciting video. Really looking for ward to seeing more from you guys.
