Love the super hero analogy!!❤ It's like maturity on the bass, or whatever instrument is learning to accept and be happy with your own super power 👌

Props for shouting out Doug Wimbish! My hero, the Tackhead records are great. And, Little Axe "The Wolf That House Built" is wicked!

I was reticent about joining SBL Live. More money. More time. But, I'm so glad I joined. I am absolutely loving Danny Mo's Motown class. I am learning so much. A year with Danny for about $42 a month. Amazing.

42? I’m seeing $95 a month. Near impossible living in China to afford that 😢

Dear. Ian, you have to try the Italian moka biialetti coffee maker. In Italy we use it at home and the coffee is strong and very unique. It’s very cheap (here at least), so give it a try 🙂

Great bass talk, cant get enough of that :). I realise that I need to have a "pee-bass" with antique old strings and mountain high action on it. I have almost always hated the sound of a P (some makes it sound good, not me). Why should I have one? 1) Pracise with recistance and not letting the fingers fly around too fast on the fretboard. Play economically, less notes, more pocket/ supportive. 2) Be prepared, if I once again come to a gig/ jam session without my own gear. Like when I some years ago entered the stage at Copenhagen Jazz Festival (Jam session) suddenly too late discovered that the backine bass was such a Fender P beast with the highest action I had ever seen. Chock, anxiety & sweat, and was unable to play more than a few bars on one of the simplest jazz standards. All skilles gone. I then had to run for cover behind the percussion set, where I played congas and so the rest of the evening instead. Fun enough, but am still ashamed of that bass tragedy 😎

12:10 I think it's very likely that actually did happen with Pino when he made the switch from fretless Stingray to fretted P

The live classes are cool, but because of work hours I would never be able to join live based on the times in the sample.....

chameleon.. hm.. let me tell you my older brother is a r&r guy. but back in the days chic freak he loved it.. and I get this all the way as a bass player .. I am a funk guy but I dig what it above. musical genre.. it is visceral .. not even dance .. it is just a good tune is a good tune of now music or any time passed.. a good tune is a good tune and 100% it is a collaboration of mucicians and singer(s) period.

IAN - You once discussed having Higher gage / Heavier strings on you G and D Strings, and lighter gage on your A and E strings. This is Intriguing. Can you discuss this further-- For example, do you simply purchase 2 difference gages of string sets at a time, and string your Bass accordingly ?

Coffee and Bass... Yes! I'm using a hario switch which is like a v60 but you can pause it to brew. I make it into a 1L carafe so plenty of coffee. Next up on SBL podcast, Ian talks with James Hoffman 😂

Boy, I’m old ánd I’m stupid! They’re like two knobs, like on a P bass: like volume and tone (😄). Volume is like aging: always full on on bass, because you can’t dail it down; tone is different: there’s choices, knowledge. So, I didn’t know about this guy. You guys made me touch my tone knob here. So I did. Don’t want to be too stupid... Now I do know about him. Thank you so much!! 🖖

Wow, I'm so old I have no idea who J Dilla and Meshugga are. Is J Dilla the "drunk feel"? I never got that. When I started playing anyone who "sounded" drunk would loose the gig in a second. Doesn't mean we were sober, far from it LOL

Love these but for the first time I have a critique and would not post it but Ian and Scott ask for them. This is the first time I have wanted Ian to shut up and let the guest talk.

Ha! P Bass, being the most awkward and uncomfortable bass and my least desirable tone... but, it sits in the mix and pokes through just right, but ugh flats, but oh wow it sounds great, but wait, there’s no low b string, but, oh screw it, the only person noticing a difference is that other bass player over there...

@@jordanwolfcastle7387 I hate p bases, lol - they always sound generic to me. I was always a fan of jazz bass and MusicMan. But, I did build a parts bass p bass with flats and I love it for that pokey p bass thing; it’s just a tone I use sparingly.

first of all . Apologise.. but with P bass and feel talk. At some point you guys should feel a responsibility of what you are sharing to all sort of Bass player. I am an oldy I am ok .. but I just imagine if I was staring playing bass and for example digging Ali oasis music full on flat and round on P bass.. and to share experiences is one thing but to say P bass left the wagon is kinda silly if you love music from a sound engineer produceur or bass player point of view. P.L.E.A.S.E .. like I said .. sorry.. but linda not sorry there. if a talk leads me to stop playing bass it isn't good is it!! .. or perhaps I dont get it ..
