Showing a clip of Deep Rock Galactic's battlepass is kinda a mistake since you can't actually buy it and everything that you miss from that pass will go in the game anyway

True but I wanted to show more clips and DRG is a game I actually play and I wanted it in the video lol. Edit: FOR ROCK AND STONE

ik im a tf2 nerd but i feel like the whole "economy" style of monetization should have been mentioned. in the games its in its almost 100% accepted and is a major part of the game's life and wellbeing, and although it is just a method to pump other monetization's i think it still has enough ground to atleast be mentioned
@Badface678

It’s interesting that there are nuances to each of these styles of monetization, such as people noticing the benefits of OW’s change from loot boxes to a battle pass, but also recognizing how little value it gave you for the cost. Not to mention it being p2w because of it immediately unlocking the newest hero.
@LuigixD
@LuigixD Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, surely getting the new hero is P2W because it puts a flower on the floor and the other ability is used wrong 50% of the time...

this may sound strange though i feel a type of monetisation for games that could be included is patronage, as in a game that is run by a dedicated group (or person) and the way it is kept afloat is from participating players purchasing a one time fee of a “membership” (or even just a donation), and they get permanent perks for supporting the community. it isn’t commonly used in any wide scale game, though I think it’s interesting regardless, since some people consider things such as hypixel in minecraft as its own (borderline) video game, and thus, the monetisation of it is unique. just some food for thought I suppose. also your editing is getting better and it shows, i love how fluid everything is

I absolutely hate battlepasses They force player to grind or else they wont get something they already paid for Its like these middle west ice cream guys that you pay and then you have to struggle to get what you paid for already Wtf?

I think it would have been nice to also include the "support the dev"... microtransactions? DLCs? Many games do it differently. Like for example, a game I recently played and really enjoyed, named Outcore, is completely free, BUT it has two paid DLCs, one is around 5 USD and another is 15. All those DLCs do is give Lumi (the main character) a clown nose or an RGB gamer clown nose respectively, as well as a few in-game dialogue lines about the nose.

When they added a battle pass to hunt showdown a lot of people were pissed and for sure the first battle pass they did was a terrible grind and in general was pretty shit. But the devs realized this and they changed how it works and it made it so much less of a grind. Overall I think its inplementation was a net positive once they figured it out.

The whole concept of a battlepass is good if you're going to play the game a lot already or you aren't very picky. In terms of value for price they're pretty good, but the linear grind is what makes them unappealing for people like me. It's like if you want something specific you have to get a bunch of small things you don't care much for before you get anything actually worth it. Plus most of the times companies just make the progression systems of their games with the battlepass in mind. Meaning the grind is way too slow without them. Effectively making the game a subscription based service if you don't want to take forever to get anything. No doubt the worst things of any monetization system are probably FOMO, Filler Unlocks, Pay to Win, and Gambling. Which normally don't all come from one method of monetization, but the worst systems combine enough different things to hit all of these marks. Milking the playerbase and making the game actively worse unless you throw more money at it than a full priced game.

Customisation is the best monetisation becuse normal player dosent get harmed from it But dont add gambling to it (looking at you tf2, the game that added Microtransactions and gambling to mainstream videogames)

Idk battle passes are kinda difficult to rate imo because it dependant on the execution and its a slippery slope between encouraging gameplay and forcing grinding... unfortunately usually leaning into the latter

Pay to own is great for offline games. I think for online games, subscriptions are the least ethically questionable, even if they aren't too popular. All other types of monetization seem to either take advantage of our addiction centers, or create unnecessary problems, only to sell us necessary solutions.

I take issue with the game pass system because it leads to the EA school of business where games eventually just... go away. Accursed Farms has an excellent video on the topic, "games as a service is a scam," but it boils down to games-as-a-service platforms being allowed to shut down a game, even a single player game that would normally be offline anyway, with no recourse for the players because you didn't buy a copy so they aren't really removing access. This is similar to the issue with always online DRM, where a game can simply be permanently destroyed because the publisher no longer wants to run the DRM servers.

I'm surprised subscription service is this low. Personally I much prefer paying 15$ a month for a game with almost everything obtainable anytime than a game designed around FOMO with battlepasses and cosmetics being on a shop for a limited time
