The Japanese when modernizing their nation in the 1870’s must have based their designs for trains off of the United States.... they don’t have British style whistles but American style ones

Most of Japan’s early Engines were built in the USA and exported to Japan, then when they started building their own, they based them off American designs.

And apparently, they whistle just as often as American trains at every crossing. Well, On this occasion anyway.

@@johncolston4758 In the US, it's required by law by FRA rule 14L. The specific code is "Long Long Short Long". Part of it is general safety, and part of it is because not only are Americans oblivious around railroad crossings but our crossings are poorly designed, with gates usually only covering the approach to a crossing on each side of the road rather than covering the whole width of the road. In Japan, I believe they just do it with excursion trains for anyone who might be watching.
