Sabarimala, Achankovil, Aryankavu and Kulathupuzha are the most important Dharma Sastha Temples of Kerala.We know that these are very old temples and the idol at Sabarimala temple had to be changed when there was a fire disaster happened in that temple.The idol at 'Achan Kovil Dharma Sastha Temple' is the very old one from the beginning of the temple.It is beleived that it is made up special stone.
Any how, by drinking a little bit of sandalwood paste mixed with a little temple well water lives of several thousands people endangered by snake bites were saved till now.The snake bitten persons brought to this temple for this divine treatment were all saved and nobody ever died.
The temple priest keep a ball of sandalwood paste in the right hand of the Dharma Sastha idol of this temple everyday morning and next day it will be removed and another fresh sandalwood paste ball will be replaced.If somebody in the area is bitten by a poisonous snake they may be brought to this temple for this treatment.Since the temple priest stays close to the temple anybody can approach at night time also.The priest takes a small portion of sandalwood paste from the idol's hand and mix it with holy water from the temple well and give it to the snake bite victim.The venom will be removed from his body completely within 24 hours by repeating this treatment for another day and by participating the poojas of the temple by the patient on that day and next day.Even in very severe cases the patients get completely cured within three days.No other medicines are given except the sandalwood paste mixed with well water.Since this temple exists near a forest area snake bites are common there.Lrd Dharma Sastha (Ayyappa) of this temple is known as 'Vaidyanath' because of this special phenomenon of this temple.
Achankovil temple is on the easter part of Quilon District close to Tamil Nadu.There are bus services from Punalur and chenkotta to this temple.
