平家物語から、屋島の合戦における、弓の名手・那須与一の活躍の場面です。
The 13th century epic "The Tale of Heike" is a narrative of a once powerful family called the Heike, telling how it rapidly gained and then lost power through a series of battles with another powerful family, the Genji. The story was passed down for hundreds of years by blind monks who played the biwa (a Japanese lute) as their profession. Today it serves as an important text for the modern biwa repertoire as well.
This is an excerpt from the work, describing a famous scene where a young archer Nasu-no-Yoichi Munetaka of the Genji faces a challenge posed by the Heike.

Thank you! I have just recently been reading "The Tale of Heike" (Heike Monogatari). This is cool! The biwa is such a heavenly instrument to pair with an amazing voice - the music of a fascinating civilization.

Thank you for your comment. So glad that you liked it! Biwa has carried its tradition of narrating stories with music. Various styles were born and grew over the long history - the style that I play is rather modern, it was developed in the 16th century as music for samurai's and flourished in late 19th to early 20th centuries, but it is deeply rooted in the older, religious biwa music. Thanks to technology (and in some part to the pandemic), a lot of different biwa music is now available on KZbin. Hope you'd enjoy those as well!

絶え間なく酸性雨が降り続く西暦2119年のロサンゼルス、耳慣れない楽器の音に誘われてふと空を見上げると、広告用の巨大スクリーンを付けた飛行船がこの唄を響かせながら眩いサーチライトで辺りを照らしつつゆっくりと飛んでいく光景が目に浮かびます。

不思議な光景…でもそんな光景が浮かぶのも、琵琶の音ならではかもしれないですね。ちょっとこの世のものではないような、現実離れしたシーンが似合うのかもしれません。

Thank you for your comment! I believe the biwa that is played in the Ghost of Tsushima is a type called Chikuzen-biwa, slightly different from one that I play, but we share a lot of patterns of music. Love that you found it familiar!
