Now I understand why there are no transcriptions of this piece available for viola: It would be entirely impossible on viola, the range just isn't there. The cellist in this video is phenomenal. I have never heard him before but I will be listening to everything I can find of him. Incredibly soulful cello playing.

+Julio David Auster This is Fitzenhagen's version. Tchaikovsky's original version is apparently rarely performed or even recorded. The exact differences between the two versions are shown on Wikipedia if you're interested. The most striking difference however, is that the lively variation 7 (17:20) served as the fourth variation in the Tchaikovsky version. There was also an eighth variation before the coda, which was cut in the Fitzenhagen version.

composer Rolf Ruggaard. It is not Tjajkovskijs original score. It is the cellist, Fitzenhagens "version" with his miserable emendations. Never should a musician (Fitzenhagen) be allowed to mistreat a composer's notes that way.
