Mahabharata and Ramayana are ancient Indian history that focuses on the development of science. In Ramayana and Mahabharata many advanced forms of pregnancy were used. Rama and his brothers were born from a Prasad given by a messenger of gods when Dashratha performed the Putra Kamesti Yagna. Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidur were born from the Niyoga method that Maharishi Veda Vyasa performed. Kauravas were test tube babies. Pandavas were born from the boon of Durvasa muni. Balrama was transferred from the womb of Devaki to Rohini in order to save him. Jarasandh was born from a fruit given to his father by Sage Chandakaushika. This proves that our ancient sages had the deeper knowledge of sciences. Hats off to our ancient sages. 🙏🙏🙏🙏.

The vow keeping of Shri Ram was always *for the others* & it brought eternal happiness to the citizens of Ayodhya who witnessed an auspicious administration led by Bharat and then by Ram. The vow keeping of Bhishm was *for self* and it imposed generations of less eligible kings over Hastinapura (with Bhishm standing helpless in many situations). Many generations of citizens paid a heavy price for this with a divided land ruled by cyclic family disputes. Two epics showing how the same act vow keeping in two different contexts and scenarios led to two completely different outcomes. A kshatriya should know when to take a vow and when to abandon it. *Nation first!*

On the contrary, I believe both Crown Princes (Yuvraj) ... Ram and Devavrat upheld their ideals and acted in ways to put the then Kings (Dashrath and Shantanu respectively) above their personal interests. Ram went into exile to prevent his father's, the King's, word from falling in value. Devavrat gave up his right to the throne and took a vow of celibacy to prevent his father, the King, from falling into despair/grief. Fast-forward to the predicament of Bhishma and that of the royal family after Vichitravirya's demise. Imagine what would happen if Bhishma, upon realizing the kingdom's need had given up his vow and taken up the Crown. It would become an example for future generations of Kings to use when they wanted to break a vow under a situation that they could prove as beneficial for "others" - the citizens of their kingdom. So, I disagree with your statement that one of them kept his vow for self. The truth about human beings is .. morals decline .. especially across generations .. and when someone at the helm of power does something even with the purest of intentions, their actions are used by later generations to serve their (for lack of better word) "less" pure intentions .. and the downward spiral continues. Exceptional actions gradually become more common ... disintegrate in morality ... get revolted against and replaced with newer exceptional actions. But the cycle never ends. This is a prime lesson to learn between Ramayana and Mahabharata. I say this even as an ardent devotee of Lord Ram. When Ram went into exile to uphold his father's words, did he not forsake his future citizens without knowing what kind of King his step-brother Bharat would be? Even if he trusted Bharat, did he have the assurance that Bharat would live until he came back from exile? Could he have guaranteed that there wouldn't be a struggle for power upon his return? He still decided to leave his citizens into the hands of fate for the duration of his exile. He kept them away from Ram Rajya even though they were in need of it after Dashrath's demise. May be he got lucky where Bhishma didn't. The future generations, we, worship Ram. Yet we criticize Bhishma. In my conscience, they are both respectable .. worship-able and if we can't give them both the respect they deserved, the least we can do is learn from their life experiences and from the decisions they made in their respective situations.

The vow keeping of Shri Ram was always *for the others* & it brought eternal happiness to the citizens of Ayodhya who witnessed an auspicious administration led by Bharat and then by Ram. The vow keeping of Bhishm was *for self* and it imposed generations of less eligible kings over Hastinapura (with Bhishm standing helpless in many situations). Many generations of citizens paid a heavy price for this with a divided land ruled by cyclic family disputes. Two epics showing how the same act vow keeping in two different contexts and scenarios led to two completely different outcomes. A kshatriya should know when to take a vow and when to abandon it. *Nation first!*

Sri Vedvyas ji is absolutely right when he says to Bhishma that *"No vow is more important or greater than the need of nation."* When Hastinapur was crying out loud for a rightful king (in the crisis of passing away of Chitrangad and Vichitraveer), it was none but Bhishma who should have respected the prayers of helpless Satyavati by breaking his aggressive vow and claiming back the throne. If the taking up of vow by Devrat was for the happiness of Shanthanu, its breaking also would have brought enormous peace to the departed soul of Shanthanu and his forefathers. If it was not right, Vyas would have never said that to Bhishma as a final reminder of his larger responsibility to his motherland. Breaking a vow taken (due personal reasons) for a much larger cause of national interest is always right and always auspicious. Bhishma failed to recognise or reconcile to this fact, as he was so obsessed by the gravity of his vow and always thinking of his own good over others. Bhishm did the same even before when he unrightfully abducted the princess sisters of Kashi against their consent and later refusing them to marry. Hastinapur had to repeatedly pay a heavy price for these wrong actions of Bhishm. Had Bhishm accepted to become the king of Hastinapur at this critical stage, the empire would have got a healthy and strong determined king. Unlike Drithrashtra or Pandu who were physically imperfect to discharge their duties. The future would have been certainly bright. Hastinapur certainly deserved great Bhishm - as King, over Bhishma standing as servant to less eligible generation of sub-optimal kings and princes. A proper decision making is so important. Hope the future learns from this.

Absolutely but two points to consider, Bhishma is a Vasu who was bound by a curse, hence Ganga ma liberated his Brother but Shantanu stop Ganga from liberating Bhishma. Hence even though he lived his life was not going to be a joyous one. Secondly something have to happen in certain ways where even great knowledge can't prevent it so that the word will be blessed with such a Saga and the Bhagavat Gita. If Bhishma took the throne Kalyug would of delayed hence a lot of factors prevent all the great points you made.

@@reclusive99 Hello sir - are you saying that the 8th vasu as Devrat and Bheeshm knew his destiny? ... That's too much to expect from him. Even the gods in heaven were unsure about it, except Trimurtis. Even then Trimurtis stressed a lot on "Karma". I urge you to please think one step further. If Bhishm was King, he would have paved way to the making of much better genre of kings like himself. This would have possibly motivated him to choose an early death per "Ichha Mrityu" boon. Kaliyug would have still arrived at it's time. The point I am making here is - that life gives us opportunities to decide and make choices. We err due to our pre conceived ill notions and prejudices. This is exactly where Lord Ram sets a role model behaviour, compared to any other great kings and/or warriors of Mahabharata. Every single decision he made was always "for the people", by always sacrificing his dear and near ones. As Lord Krishna, he motivated the kings of Dwapara to follow the model of Lord Ram. Sadly, the result was different for variety of reasons and the world knows it. We crave for "Ram Rajy" because we are absolutely clear that this model of administration works equally good in all times. Sacrifice and Compassion has become a rarest of rare human instinct in today's world. *Jai SiyaRam!*

Indeed if Bhishma Pita became King only timeline would of changed. We came from a great era where Shree Ram was King, he set the stage and Standards yet man has diluted to the Mahabharata and more to where the world is today. The Ramayan and Mahabharata is quite relevant for life today for any individual interested in Moksha and learning the path to reach such goal and also learning how to not fall victim to the maya of this world. We have the Ramayan and Mahabharata yet the mentality of man today is weak. I myself wished Bhishma became King because that was his right but as Bhishma said or any learned one said there are no Ifs and Buts just action and staying with your words. The Filial love began with Shantanu and Bhishma. Bhishma behaved liked a Son and not the Crown prince hence he made such a terrible vow, and he knew there will be consequences to that. Bhishma tried again to prevent the war by nominating Dhritarashtra to be King, but Vidurji used his own politics and chose Pandu. When Bhishma made that vow there were so many things that could of happen to prevent the war but didn't happen because the war was certain when Bhishma made that vow. When Bhishma made the vow he knew his destiny and even before because if he didn't know he can't be Bhishma Pita.

Bhagwan Sri Krishna has explained this in Bhagwad Gita too. Mahabharat & Ramayana Teaches Us Moral Values , Moral Laws and Encourages Us To Follow Path Of Righteousnes..
