So glad you managed to film your practical course, a real insight into what to expect. Big thanks for sharing and impressed how fast you got it edited and online. Looking forward to the next two. Fair winds.

Great Video! Heaving to was something I became aware of on Sailing Uma! Dan and Kika do this often! Carl and Jenny are finally putting their training to work today! Happy for them! See you in part 2! 👍👍⛵⚓⛵

Thanks Marie It is the one thing we wanted to learn the most, second only to MOB. We did see Dan and Kika do it when Dan banged his head and she was shattered. Sooo happy for Carl and Jenny, it'll be great for them plus it'll give us all chance to watch them sailing 👌🏼x

Wow, I love this video! I am yearning for our trip even more now ( very nervous) But this is very helpful. You look so comfortable . Nicely edited vid too! In the other 2 parts I hope to get to see the inside of the boat as well! How exciting for you all! You should be proud of yourselves. XXXX

Lovely comment Amber, your making us blush ☺️ Not be long before your all away learning. There is a few bits of the inside in the videos but not a lot. We both feel very proud and feel like we have accomplished something xx

Great vid as usual. Did you get any centre cleat or spring off instruction? Hove too is probably the best thing any sailor can learn, when we catch up we will tell you a mid channel tale of hove too that literally saved the bacon. Ant & Cid xxx

Hey Ant & Cid Yes we had some bow and stern spring off lessons. We had watched countless heave to videos on KZbin but didn't quite get it, now having done it on the course, we are very happy, it's something we really wanted to be able to do. Looking forward to hearing your story xx

Just catching up on your latest videos. Great to see you guys doing the RYA course and it is a shame more don't follow your lead as it is a great ground I and confidence boost. Best of luck I am sure you will sail through it' forgive the pun. I did my Day Skipper and Yacht master back in 1984/5 and so much has changed in terms of electronics I am thinking of doing it again,to get up to date. Safe passage and can't wait to see what boat you buy in the end. Andy UK SY Corrival Rival 32

FrenchAM100 Thanks Andy We really did enjoy the course and we learnt lots, it helps that our instructor was very good at how she explained things. Ron who was on the course with us, did his sailing qualifications many years ago and he did the course just for a refresher. We have our eyes on a couple of boats but nothings set in stone just yet. Thanks for watching

Hi guys, been good catching up on your vlogs, great to see people in the sailing community’s progress from the beginning when they go from zero experience to sailing across oceans it just reinforces so much confidence in those who want to get into sailing but think they should of done it in there 20s instead of 30s 😆. A lot of people feel that sailing is something people can only do if they have experience in the industry grown up as in family history or those who have grown up around it. I used to feel this way myself until I recently went on a boat charter in San blas panama with a great captain for a week who has now awakened me to the whole sailing world. watching KZbin content like your channel shows it can be done. Just wondering if this theory course can only be done once actually booking a course with a specific training centre or individual. I noticed you said you took a couple months to work your way through it then took the actual exam then went for your 5 day practical. What was the process you went through to get the theory course and is there any time period from getting the theory to play around with and practice before doing final exam. Apologies for the novel of a comment 😂 And again, fantastic vlog very helpful 😎👍🏽

Hi, Firstly thanks for watching the videos and taking the time to comment. We too thought that sailing and sailors was something you was grown up doing, then when we started watching youtube we saw all the videos of the pretty 20 something year olds making great videos. Luckily we thought sod it we'll try sailing, and then when we went to Greece and got hooked, as you will know from your charter in San blas. We decided we'd try our hand at documenting it for others to see, hence the channel on YT. I do believe you can do the theory as part of the practical and people we've spoke to said its far easier to learn in a class environment than it is at home, however doing it from home is convenient to do at your pace. It took us a few weeks purely because we did it very casually, I dare say you could do it in two or three days. Im not sure if you have to do your practical within a certain time frame from doing the theory, I would recommend doing them fairly close together because it's still fresh in your mind. Neither are particularly difficult. Best of luck with your plans and thanks again for watching. Gav

I know that like many others I would prefer the wind to the music. we might meet each other in the future as we are going to buy a Garcia next year, I haven't sailed for some time as I was burning gas, but sold it and going to put the clothes line up again.. Reg

Hi Gav and Hannah. Great video and very insightful. Going to do day skipper in a couple of months at Largs. Did Scotsail provide you with sailing jackets etc or did you take your own? Cheers, Sean

I love your videos but like all the others I watch without sound because you play your music toooooo loud. why do you think we need music??? Reg
@OverlandSea
@OverlandSea 4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for the feedback Reg, in these earlier videos we were new to filming and editing and didn't know that, however loud it is in the editing suite, it comes out much louder when published. We have music in there because a lot of instances we have had to turn the sound off because the wind noise is horrible and it'd be a silent video without the music, obviously the music genre is a personal choice. We've since invested in a mic with a muffler and learnt how to control the audio levels.

after a little research this is apparently the minimum course your insurance may ask for in order to insure you on a small fishing boat , what the hell as sailing a yacht got to do with being on a 17 foot boat with an outboard and how much does a 5 day stay on that yacht cost ???
@OverlandSea
@OverlandSea 5 жыл бұрын
try contacting an rya school and ask their advice and prices.
@markturner4219
@markturner4219 5 жыл бұрын
I think someone misinformed you. The RYA runs completely seperate syllabi for dinghy, power boat, keel boat and sailing cruisers. If the 17 foot boat has sails then Keelboat Level one would be the minimum, although I have never had an insurance company insist upon formal qualifications before insuring (although if you have them it makes life easier), They have always been more interested in being able to demonstrate experience. Besides the benefit of learning, the other big plus of Day Skipper is it allows you to get an International Certificate of Competence from the RYA if going abroad.

Hi Guys Great video as always. Was wondering if Scotsail provided your day skipper theory course or if they recommended someone? I'm about to embark on my sailing adventures a bit like yourselves and am going to go and do the competent crew first and was looking at Scotsail or Go West - both outta Largs wondered if you had a look at Go West and what your thoughts were? Cheers Brett

Hi Brett Thank you We did our theory course online through a company called "Nav at home" they was very good and had no problems at all with them. A Patron & Subscriber recommended Scotsail to us and they have been great, our instructor Pavlina is an excellent instructor. We have heard of Go West but not had any experience with them, I should imagine they are also very good. We try to stick to what's been recommended to us. All the best Gav
