Ken King's Flying Machines

Ken King's Flying Machines

After I lost my first one in a tree, this second one refused to fly. I spent months blindly moving the cg back and forth and finally found 2 big globs of glue on the bottom of the center wing seam. I cleaned that up and added 1/16" shim under the L.E. and she flew as shown with 4 loops of 1/8". The Montreal stop is unreliable, but when it works, the glide is gorgeous!

A minor correction. The proper name for the plane is P1B-1. I only mention it because someone doing a search for videos of this plane won't see yours. Just got one myself and am looking forward to flying it. Update: Thanks for the change. 😀

That was really nice Ken 👍 I have one ready with RC assist with rudder and radio DT, but every time I take it out it's too breezy. This is my introduction to rubber powered models. I was wondering what rubber to use, so will try 4 loops of 1/8". It currently has 4 loops of 1/16" and seems lacking.

I bought some micro RC equipment for mine, but I'm too chicken to try and make it all work. I'm using 4 strands of 1/8 in the videos and it doesn't have a lot of power to spare. R/C should keep it out of trees, though. I read other reports of flyers using 10 strands of 1/16 but they had trouble stuffing it all in the fuse.

Hi Ken, was amazed to see the folding prop, do you DIY the folding prop?

No, the prop was part of the kit. It is made of metal and plastic, and isn't all that reliable. The catch for the propeller keeps getting pushed forward so it won't stop, but you push it back and it works a few more times. The propellers and airplanes are available from jhaerospace.com/ The nice thing is that I finally was able to see how a montreal stop worked and I'm currently building my own for a larger model!

Wonderful flights Ken. What a flyer!!! I would like one but I am restricted to a small field. I noticed Carl's comment on rc assist rudder and DT. I am very curious to know what radio set up it is? Did'nt know it was possible to combine rc with rubber? Well that opens up some more scope for me as I love aeromodelling but use a radio as I like them too. Beautifully trimmed out! Keep away from the dammned trees!!! Peter

Apparently, this airplane is designed to weigh 40g for competition, and little weights are included for the required ballast. I did not use them, but micro R/C gear exists that would be light enough for this plane, and several others have done so. I question whether you would get enough rubber in the motor tube to make it worthwhile, so I am building a BIGGER plane to fly in my SMALL field. I am not a smart man. Lol
