According to my references, the propeller originally fitted to the P40 was the Curtiss Electric C5315S with 614-1C1.5-12 Blades, and was 11ft Diameter. However, according to the original CAA AIRWORTHINESS APPROVAL NOTE (AAN), the propeller used on G-KITT is a Curtiss Electric model C532DF99, 10' diameter, with blade type No. 89303-24. This of course could have been changed since, as this ANN was issued in 1998. Btw, a few of the P40's flying today actually use Hamilton Standard props!

Actually irishodoriel The Brits and other Commonwealth forces including New Zealand called it both Tomahawk (P-40A to P-40C) and Kittyhawk (P-40D +)

I love this plane. Think it because of the teeth and eyes and it just a great plane.

Actually, I don't think that is fact. The roll rate data I have for a P-39D-1 was recorded as having a peak roll rate of 75 dps @ 235 mph, whilst the P-40 (H81) has a recorded roll rate of 135 dps @360 mph. Whilst I don't know what stick force was applied in the P-40, it seems that it was 50lbs for the P-39. The improved P-63 had a higher roll rate than the P-39 (peak of 110 mph @ 250mph), but as you can see, it was still below that of the P-40.

while the p39 had a slower roll rate, the slower speed meant that it actually got to use that peak roll rate more throughout the dog fight. I dont know if you have read "An ace of the 8th" by Norman Fortier but even he said this: Compared to the p-39, the p40 handled like a mack truck..... He went on to talk about how everything was harder in the p-40 than the p-39....even just climbing to 10,000 feet.

Nice vid. Interesting comments. Good sound. At least the P40 wasn't given to going into a flat spin like the P39. A P40 could stay on it's feet.

That's where were at their best, at low altitudes, where the lack of performance at altitude didn't matter so much. The Russians made good use of them as well.

You know the 40 may have been slower to climb than the p39 but no axis aircraft could outdive her in combat until the 109G and 190D and they took more zeros than any English fighter of her class.
