P5 OF 6 |PSALM 90 | ETERNITY | A SUMMER OF PSALMS
Psalm 90 Sermon July 21, 2024
Intro: CEO Thomas Wheeler
Acts 7:23-25 (NIV2011)
23 “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites.
24 He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.
FIRST:
Psalm 90:1-6 (NIV2011)
1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals.” 4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. 5 Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death- they are like the new grass of the morning: 6 In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered.
Psalm 90:10 (NIV2011)
10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.
Psalm 90:12 (NIV2011)
12 Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Life is short
Example: The relative length of a year
BUT:
Psalm 90:17 (NIV2011)
17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us- yes, establish the work of our hands.
2 Corinthians 5:1 (NIV2011)
1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
1 John 5:11 (NIV2011)
11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
Life is short
In Christ, we live forever
Hebrews 9:27 (NIV2011)
…people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment…
Life is short
In Christ, we live forever
Eternal life is determined during this brief life
Matthew 6:19-20 (NIV2011)
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
SECOND:
Psalm 90:7-9 (NIV2011)
7 We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation.
8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
9 All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan.
Psalm 90:11 (NIV2011)
11 If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due.
God’s wrath toward our sin is great
BUT:
Psalm 90:13-14 (NIV2011)
Have compassion on your servants. 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
God’s wrath toward our sin is great
In Christ, sin is forgiven
Example: Father and Daughter in Prairie Fire
1 Peter 2:24 (NIV2011)
24 “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
Closing:
John 3:36 (NIV2011)
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.
