সম্প্রতি একটি সমীক্ষা চমকে দেওয়া তথ্য সামনে এনেছে শহরের প্রবীনদের নিয়ে। জেরিয়াট্রিক সোসাইটি অফ ইন্ডিয়ার তত্ত্বাবধানে বাঁচবো সংস্থার করা একটি সমীক্ষা বলছে, শহরে প্রায় ৭২ শতাংশ প্রবীণই একা থাকেন। একপ্রকার তারা একা থাকতে বাধ্য হচ্ছেন। এনাদের মধ্যে বেশিরভাগেরাই পরিবার অর্থাৎ সন্তান কর্মসূত্রে হয় বিদেশে নয় ভিন রাজ্যে থাকেন। পরিসংখ্যান বলছে শহরে প্রবীনদের একাংশ এমনও আছেন, যাদের পরিবার এক শহরে থেকেও একসঙ্গে থাকেন না।

এই সরকার ক্ষমতায় আসার পর তো এই রাজ্যে চৌর্যবৃত্তি ছাড়া ছাড়া কোনো কর্মসংস্থান নেই, তাইতো সন্তানদের কর্মসূত্রে অন্য রাজ্যে বা বিদেশে থাকতে হয়, যাদের সন্তানরা সরকারের সাহায্যে চৌর্যবৃত্তি তে যুক্ত সেই সকল বাড়ির বৃদ্ধ বৃদ্ধারা সন্তানদের কাছে পান।

সঙসারে সন্তানের বা সন্তানদের সঙ্গে থেকে, প্রতিদিন অপমানিত হওয়া, শারীরিক, মানসিক নানারকম নির্যাতন মুখ বুজে (লোক জানাজানি হলে সম্মানহানি হবার ভয়ে) সহ্য করার থেকে বাড়ির বাইরে কোনও ভদ্র পরিবেশে শান্তি ও সম্মানের সঙ্গে বাস করা; অনেক ভালো। সরকারের এই বিষয়ে ভাবনা চিন্তা করা দরকার।

পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্তমান সরকারের কাছ থেকে এ ব্যাপারে কোন কিছু পাওয়ার আশা ভাবাও যায় না। এ বেপারে সামাজিক সচেতনতার এবং সন্মানের প্রয়োজন। উত্তর ভারতের দিকে একটু তাকিয়ে দেখুন, এ বিষয়ে হয়তো কিছু শেখা যাবে। বিদেশী শিক্ষার সাথে বিদেশী সমাজ ব্যবস্থার দিকে আমরা একটু বেশী এগিয়ে গেছি।

Advancement in medical facilities has increased the average life expectancy globally, but there is an acute shortage of infrastructure needed for elderly. Most of the good old age homes are beyond the reach of middle class people and the government owned ones are in a shabby state. There aren't any assisted living facilities in our country. Geriatric care facilities catering especially to the mental and physical healthcare needs of elderly are virtually nonexistent. Palliative care and hospice facilities for terminally ill patients is also extremely hard to find. In our country if you are old and alone your life is bound to be miserable. This is one section of society that the government is least interested in. My sincere appeal to the concerned authorities is that if you can't provide a respectable life to the elderly population, please make laws to legalize euthanasia so that the elderly can at least choose a respectable death.

Ore baba koto gyan, what about those show called old age people who abused their daughter in law from many years? Calling names, insult them, never empathize when she was ill, insult her parents, abuse her without any valid reason, try to control her life, snach her independence and individuality, always poke nose in her household and make her feel that she is an outsider and remain be an outsider forever even after 10-12 years of her wedding, that's the main reason behind these old age homes, this control freak megalomaniacs don't understand that they will be thrown out of the house if they don't stop it right now, for them the son is an ATM and the daughter in law is a full time maid who have to obey their commands till their last breath, show the opposite side of the story as well instead of blaming the new generation
