It's funny how future Med students will come on posts like this and try to undermine the PA profession. My response, as a future PA student, is that we all have to sacrifice something in life. There will never be a career that has 100% satisfaction. My work-life balance is really important to me, so If I want to sacrifice the higher pay, I will do it. Prestige and money is not what I put on a pedestal anyway. For me, happiness outweighs everything else.

Good for her! I'm in my residency program, and I have no time for anything. And what little time I have isn't sufficient to do much. I encouraged a friend of mine who wanted to get into healthcare by didn't want the intense physician's commitment to take a look into PA school. PA's are really helpful around the hospital, and usually have fantastic bedside manner. I try to be as bubbly as possible, but I work so much that it's a little hard. PA's are a valuable asset.

As I'm working on figuring out why exactly I would like to become a PA (here at Barnes & Noble, with my notebook literally writing down all the reasons, both superficial and not), I came across this video. Sundance literally summed up in a word what it was I am searching for: BALANCE. I literally wanted to burst into tears as it was like an epiphany! I've already committed to myself, if I don't get accepted into PA school this year, I will apply again next year. Thanks for the motivation!

i graduated medical school, from a foreign school in the Caribbean. I passed all the USMLE board exams. Due to the extremely high competition and stigma against foreign grads, I was never able to get a residency. My goal is still to practice medicine, and therefore applying to PA school this spring. I know PA school is very competitive, but I really hope I can get in. I know I would be a great PA

In my personal opinion, if you've already spent enormous time and successfully graduated med school, you should keep looking. You aren't the only one who is having trouble finding residencies, as I read recently that it is a national problem for med students of all nationalities (there are some that have went 2 years without finding one). Maybe if you want to be a generalist, you could catch a residency easier, since that is the US's downfall (high need for them since everyone's becoming specialists). Network with people as well, find out where your classmates went, as it's more about who you know rather than what you know nowadays.

Great informative video! I graduated with a bs in chemistry I was premed and dreamed of doing dermatology until I transferred colleges and my junior year and found out about PA. I couldn’t get into pre pa program and I applied to PA school and didn’t get in because of my lack of experience ....I have a high gpa but lack extra curricular stuff Took a year off dealing with my dads death and regrouping myself I did not realize how competitive PA school really is and I will be applying next April and really doubting myself ...I am 24 and the feeling of time running out or comparing myself to other peers who are half way through med school and freaking out that I am wasting my time with applying fir PA school because I feel every little thing I do isn’t good enough fir these schools. I feel I am running out of time to figure things out. I have shadowing experience but they say I need more it is very hard to get someone to shadow with when you are no longer a student and have no one in my family who is in healthcare field. I have a ton of volunteering hours but they would like it to not be only at hospital and I have little leadership experience to put down. I currently work as a CNA and love what I do ...I am all over the place if I should go nursing route, or study for the mcat and go MD route , or just keep trying to get into PA school.

Great video! What do you guys think about NP (Nurse Practitioner) which to me very similar to PA but maybe with more flexibility like able to work at any hospital, clinic, being in hospital management where PA can only work for a doctor or in doctor office? My daughter is starting her pre-nursing in CA and one of the friend's mom Nurse said she like PA better because a NP still has to take orders from doctor. So which one is better oversall.

@SkylarEllison, you are oversimplifying. The average PA program is 27 months (FYI, three years is 36 months...). So a little over 2 years. After a person finishes medical school, they then must complete a residency for 3-5 years, depending what area you go into. So, PA training: a little over 2 years. Med training: 7-9 years. In order for doctors to further specialize (higher pay), they may complete additional training after residency (fellowships) increasing total training to 9-11 years.

Hey Maudian... Did you end up going with the PA-MPH program? I am wavering between DO/MD and PA. I am interested in public health research and would like to have an academic track. I want to be able to conduct research with a great clinical background. I am almost 27 and it would take me two years to actually get into medical school since I would need to re-take the MCAT and I would also like to have a family life as well. I am interested in learning what you decided. Thanks! :-)

While in the PA program what do the studies mainly consist of? Is it mainly biology or do you still have to continue on doing complex mathematics and organic chemistry. Do they actually teach you what you will be doing as a PA the first year? Because I hear much of everything you learn in undergraduate school is only 20% of what you will need when you actually start working.

Thank you for this interview! I've gone as far as to be accepted to medical school and now that it's staring me in the face, I'm having serious reservations about whether or not "the 18 hour day is enough for me", as you put it. The more I think about it, the more I feel that something like a PA-MPH program might be more to my liking. It's really hard to give up a medical school acceptance. . .but I'm trying my best to do right by myself (which, ultimately, is doing right by my patients).

Well, look at it this way. Some MDs wonder what it's like becoming a PA and some PAs wonder what it was like becoming a MD. There's really nothing wrong about each career you field to go into. If you want total autonomy, than become a MD, but then again some PAs get close to 100% autonomy because of the physicians that they work with.

Shadow, Shadow, Shadow. I cannot emphasize this enough. I feel there are distinct personality types that fit each profession. There is a lot of liability in medicine, insane long hours, insane expectations, stress, autonomy (not always a good thing), and ultimately it's a lifelong commitment. Don't look at the prestige and money and let those be your ULTIMATE factors. It's a very long haul to becoming a doctor and you have to be 100% for sure. Don't get me the wrong way. PA is not a backup to medical school and it certainly isn't a walk in the park. It's a very demanding program and you have to be for sure it's what you want. My experience: I could have picked either but I chose PA for lifestyle purposes. The liability and expectations of becoming a doctor are arduous, expensive, and ultimately indentured servitude will take over your life for a period of time. Is it worth it? Depends. Depends on what YOU want in life. Keyword you. I have too many of my buds whose parents forced them into medicine. Some are ok but they definitely aren't happy. The TV shows (Mindy Project, ER). Don't look at the money. Yeah, you make more. But at what cost? Will you get to enjoy your life? Be with your kids? PA is HOT now. People are finding out about this profession and things are changing for the better. PA school is HARD to gain admission into. The numbers just don't lie. Be sure to really do some research on the web. Talk to docs. Talk to PAs. Get a real life perspective on what it is before you make the commitment. Once you choose either, the debt locks you in. Moreso medical school. Best of luck.

@SkylarEllison, what's even worse is you probably think you're supporting becoming a doctor, but most doctors I know would be seriously pissed by your implication that doctors only have 1 more year of medical training than PAs. Doctors work insane hours during residency and fellowship, so even though they are officially doctors, they are very much still in training. I hope you educate yourself more than this before you attempt to choose any career path!

Didn't complete her MD. Third year (which she started) is the start of clerkship. You get your MD at the end of the 4th year, and still can't practice till you've finished a 3-6 year residency. You could say she did see most of what medical school had to offer though.

I currently go to PCOM. My questionis, do you ever become as good as a doctor? Will there ever be a time when you can do 100% of what a doc can do? We currently do rotations with med students and I do not think they know any more than me in basic sciences. I daresay that PA school is the same as medical school but in half the time. I do feel that there is NO difference between us and MDs and residency can be replaced with experience. I hope to see MD/DO/PA at the same level one day

No, they don't. They learned an abridged version of medical school. They basically take out all the scientific training behind becoming an MD/DO and teach mostly just the necessary skills to give treatment. Physicians have a greater body of knowledge and scientific understanding, which is why they are able to diagnose more complex problems and relate to deeper understanding of the disease process. Think of engineer vs general contractor. Both build a house, but one makes the blueprint.

Actually, PA school is 2 years. The average debt of a PA grad is ~50K. Med students leave with ~180K in debt. PA grads can immediately begin their career where ENTRY LEVEL positions can pay up to 70K salary. MD's must enter a 4-5 year residency w/ waitress salary (minus tips). And when they finally begin, their pay IS better than a PA, but most MD's don't get THEIR debt to an even reasonable amount until sometimes their 60's! They are near retirement before they start making any REAL money.

This is misleading. She didn't even finish medical school nor did she encounter the real challenge which is residency. She's just someone who tried med school and re-assessed their life and did PA instead.

Well, I interviewed 3 Drs, they all told me: IF you can become a MD why would you go for PA? One of them specifically told me 'not to choose PA' ' if you go for Derm PA, the max that dermatologist ask you to do, is to burn a mold. Is that what you want to do in your life?!'. So, my survey results were quite opposite to compare with yours. They all said not to consider PA as a career.

lili M You have to consider that she sampled a total of 60 interviews with MDs and PAs before making a decision, but in your case you only sampled 3. If you want to get a better idea of MD vs PA, then I suggest you talk to more people. Interviewing only 3 MDs is a relatively small sample that is prone to bias.

I guess it depends because a lot of doctors I have talked to have told me PA is the way to go and many doctors I have talked to actually told me that if they could go back, they would NEVER go to med school and thought PA would be better for them. I think the best advice is to really research what an NP, PA, RN, DO, and MD does and what they cannot do. See which career fits your lifestyle and which career will eventually make you happy. It's so hard to be happy nowadays, so choose what's right for you. You know yourself best, so only you can make the best decision and that's really by doing lots of research. Take people's advice and analyze it, don't make decisions based on what people tell you. Choose the path that you know will let yourself be you.

Meh not every doctor is working 12 hrs a day in the ER, many doctors who have their own practice and work 3-4 days a week if they want , really just a shit stereotype people use to cope with their decision of not pursuing their dream

Why? PA’s are in “the middle” of the hierarchy between nurses and doctors. It’s just accurate.

PA school, not worth it. Med School = 4 Years. PA School = 3 Years. Med School = Big Load Of Debt. PA School = Big Load Of Debt. MD Pay = Better Than A PA's. PA Pay = Not As Good As A MD's. PA Respect = Not Much. MD Respect = Much More Than PA's.

SkylarEllison Med School = 4 years plus minimun 3 year residency PA School = 3 years Med School = Big Load of Debt PA School = Not as much debt MD Pay = Better after at least 7 years PA Pay = Good pay after 3 years PA = More family time, fuck respect MD = Less family time, more respect I guess. But generally in a hospital PA's are called "doctor" by patients so I really don't think they get disrespected

I don’t really think the respect thing is true. I’ve been a RN for 8 years. Worked all over.. PA s & NPs are very highly respected, just as much as the MDs. In fact they are usually nicer and easier to talk to and mess stuff up less. Plus, now a days, the doc is rarely in hospital ... only residents and they are kinda useless. The PA , NP,& RN is teaching them . Not saying MD is not needed. Just the respect issue.
