I believe that's a pickguard. It prevents the surface of the guitar from being scratched by a guitar pick.

I believe it is called a tap plate. Flemenco [and some classical] players use it to protect the wood of the guitar top when using Golpé and Rasqueado [strumming] techniques.

It is to prevent your nails form scratching the guitar. Lot of classical guitar stores put these on the guitar when people want to test them out in the store. Usually removed after you buy the guitar.

Música foi composta como forma de expressão. O intérprete cabe extrair ao máximo essa expressão. Já vi muitas execuções dos próprios compositores sobre suas obras e péssimas. Eis a diferença de um compositor para um intérprete! Ele interpretou lindamente, diria que beirando à perfeição.
