Not sure if people realize Nick is genuinely trying to help people. He helped Wildes be a better host, he helped Coach by telling Coach to shine out by always antagonizing Nick's takes, He's now helping Danny Parkins who's the nerdy mold, by making him a bit more likeable and unlikeable at once while also giving him shoutouts in the form of "rivalry" every week. He's done the same for Pablo. Starting clearly fake, joke beefs but that make the other person likeable to the audience.
@wh56013 күн бұрын
Obviously you can never know for sure and parasocial relationships over the internet are stupid but Nick has always come across as one the more authentic people in the sports tv world to me. If I had to make a sports comp, it’d be Chris Paul. Unapologetically competitive to the point that he’s sometimes accused of playing dirty but at the end of the day, he’s super smart and consistently enables those around him to be the best versions of themselves
@chasingfelix36093 күн бұрын
He absolutely does that for Parkins. It is pretty nice of him to do

@@wh5601 One thing I've noticed about Nick that I don't see from other sportscasters is I feel like he genuinely tries to befriend everyone he works with, and not in a fake way. You hear on FTF all the time that a lot of times they're watching sports together, going bowling, or just hanging out casually. Like I don't think it's an accident that FTF has some of the best show chemistry of any sports talk show - the interactions always feel real because of that actual friendship.

Honestly this episode made me like Nick Wright exponentially more. Why? Because he’s authentically himself regardless of setting. And I love his mindset too. Nothing wrong with pride in your smart good results and shrugging off the bad ones or losing. Pablo tried to make him seem full of himself with a few loaded questions. But I loved Nick’s responses to all of them. I’m inspired now to start something of my own thanks to him. Because he shows trusting the process while learning from your failures along with way is the way to do it. Great episode thank you Pablo for hosting, but I think your rival is the smartest guy on sports tv. Him and Bomani he’s my dude too.

Years ago, I heard Ed Robertson talk about how the Barenaked Ladies are in their sweet spot in the music industry. They have a large enough fan base that can support them when they release an album and go on tour, but they’re not so famous that they have to spend too much time away from their families or they have to have security wherever they go or that their creative process is hindered when they’re making a new album. THAT is the sweet spot. Being cheered by thousands while you’re doing your job and then being able to walk around almost anonymously when you’re not working.

My favourite of Nick's no.3 (wrong) takes, as a Warriors fan, was him saying in 2020 that acquiring Andrew Wiggins ensured "we will never see Steph in another NBA Finals again." Wiggins then went on to be the definitive second option of the Warriors Finals victory two seasons later, and Nick tweeted it was his "most regrettable television take."

I can totally see that. As a non hockey fan I know his name and that he’s the hockey GOAT but I couldn’t identify him by his looks. So he could probably go incognito a lot of the time (in the USA, I imagine it’s a different story in Canada).

I have found moderate fame in a foreign country (Indonesia)making comedy content about culture and all that. It hasn't brought any financial fame but that's OK and the level of recognition varies. Sometimes it's quite often and other times it's rare. I've been in places where I couldn't walk 10 steps without a picture or "hey bang joe!"but I've also gone days without it. To speak to Nick saying he wants to be recognized. I'm introverted but Ilike making people laugh, so for me, getting recognized in the right situations is definitely nice. And when it doesn't happen, I'm not sad or feel low but I REALLY like it when it does happen, as long as they're polite. The "love your work" in passing is always the best. A quick photo is nice. It's the over the top "OMG I KNOW YOU"but they dont know your name kind of thing that makes it suck sometimes.
