The Pac-12 went into Monday with hopes of adding a trio of schools from the American Conference in Memphis, Tulane, and South Florida. That plan fell through and then things continued to get worse as the day progressed, now they're waiting on UNLV to see if they're in a truly dire situation after adding Utah State.
On today's episode of Locked On College Football, Spencer McLaughlin discusses Miami's latest win, a dominant 50-15 victory on the road against South Florida. Is there a team in the ACC that will make any serious push at Clemson and Miami in the conference title hunt? 12:15
Spencer concludes today's show talking about 3 teams that badly need wins in Week 5 following their week 4 performances. Oklahoma State has a tough road battle against Kansas State, while Oklahoma and Auburn seek to salvage slow starts to the year. 22:26

The MWC could have avoided this if they didnt try to hamstring BSU, SDSU and Fresno State in the middle of existing contracts. You dont like teams leaving? Well maybe dont try to renag on what you agreed to pay them, when you are already paying them a fraction of what they are worth. The MWC calculus was that Boise was too academically poor and too geographically constrained to ever get a better deal and that the PAC would never fall. They never anticipated California getting stupidly expensive to the point where Boise is seeing 4 consistent years of 300% growth coupled with the PAC collapse.

Im a Memphis fan. And I'm speaking for 95% of the fanbase. We hate the AAC. If you look at footage from 2017 to 2019 Memphis home games. Then look at even the Boise game crowd last year vs the 2019 SMU game. We are tired. Since joining the AAC WE'VE watched Uconn Rutgers Louisville Cincinnati SMU UCF HOUSTON 7 schools out of 10 gone. We could care less about ,rice,Charlotte, tulsa,FAU,UAB, ECU, NAVY,ARMY,Temple! This was a chance to right the ship with the fans. Agree with most of what you said except for one thing. Nevarez started this whole mess. WSU and OSU at first did not have plans to rebuild were just planning to wait it out for couple years and see what happens. But during negotiating for the second year for them to play against MWC teams Nevarez greatly increased the cost thinking she basically steal from PAC-12 she felt we had no where else to go or do. None of this would have happened if she kept the same fee for second year or a little bit more. But she chose not to do that. Now Teresa screw the pooch big time with the AAC schools. I am not 100% sold on the assistance just being 2.5mil for their b/o I have not seen that reported by anyone reputable other than the net or couple Radio DJ's. But still I would have went hard after them maybe not so much Florida school but Tulane and Memphis I would have open the wallet on them.

I don't think the AAC schools closed the door on the PAC for good. All they did was say no to 2026. If those schools give the AAC a 27+ months notice the exit fee drops to 10M. So if the PAC can get to 8 AND have an appealing TV deal they could quickly be back on the table for 2027 or 2028.

They’re probably waiting to see what happens with the ACC now too. Now that they have their new thing that’s supposed to stabilize the conference until 2030, it’s not inconceivable that they’ll frontfill anticipating the departures of at least FSU and Clemson in 2030. In that instance Tulane, Memphis and USF are all probably close to the front of the line to get a call up.

C-USA has a GOR so at this point I think it’s just as likely that if the PAC snags UNLV and the AAC Air Force, that C-USA grabs UNM for all sports and Wyoming football only and coup de graces the MWC leaving three schools that no other conference wants and would struggle to get even enough FCS schools to join them to remain a conference.

Monday sucked, but there’s a pretty clear path to the PAC being fine and even a path to them being great. Adding UNLV is a clear first step. If they can add Gonzaga, Grand Canyon and/or St Mary’s that’s a huge bonus. If they can win or even settle their lawsuit and reduce the poaching penalty that’s also a big win. And finally a no from those AAC schools now is not a no forever. If they get to 8 teams and get a media deal with agreed upon escalators then that answers the biggest question the AAC teams had. Do that and get some good news in court and suddenly the pitch to those AAC schools looks wayyy different.

The truth may be thus: There’s only so many desirable time slots on networks most people watch. Once the Pac-12 was being shunted away from them (at least on a consistent basis), that’s why USC started flirting with independence… before they convinced the B1G they had to move. The time slot the networks want the Pac to be in, the slot for which they’ll pay the Pac now, may not be what Memphis wants. Maybe the Pac should’ve shown ‘em all the bird. California was going to make their school athletics fully professional, but that died in the Assembly. Maybe that was the move. Very few of the options after that are satisfying or tenable. Remember before the departures when some Pac schools hinted at the possibility of 9 am kickoffs? That was a sign.

Foe them it makes more sense to stand pat, wait for the blood bath when the SEC and B10 go out to bid for media rights again. However, the Mountain West expires in 2 years. So if you're a Mountain West school what have you got to lose? You could get more money and play with bigger brands like OSU and WSU, or what play with a diminished MW? Sacramento State could be a good add to either conference due to media market. I think the PAC12 should add whom ever wants to join, or revisit a merger/disillusionment by adding more members.

That Big 10-Newscorp TV deal should’ve made the schools realize that the inevitable was coming sooner rather than later. Either one of the following must be the reason why all these schools rejected the Pac-State 7: 😂 1. Too much travel for the Central & Florida schools to go west so many times. Which makes me won why California & Stanford should be bound to that god-awful Grant of Rights deal especially since they don’t get their full share until 2027. 2. The AAC conference teams are waiting the ACC to be gutted so that some of these schools might get picked up there instead of going all the way out west. 3. They all simply don’t trust the leadership of the PAC so why take that risk for what might be a promise to obtain some limited relevancy. 4. Who knows if the AAC might believe that they’ll be a conference that’ll make more money in a new $10-15 million dollar TV deal if all the teams stay together. P.S.: Sacramento State & Texas State; just what the Pac needs: yet another State school to fully convey the PAC-State conference. Utah State… really? I feel like Hawaii isn’t even a bad idea there. I’m certain that the PAC conferences would love to go to Hawaii even though the travel expenses are quite brutal for any sport other than football.

I think if the PAC 12 gets shafted by UNLV, Rice would be an underrated addition. Yes, it’s clear that they're not a football and basketball juggernaut, but they have a lot to add. Like what Vanderbilt is to the SEC, Rice could be to the PAC 12. An academically prestigious university in a huge media market (hell even bigger than Nashville) is a valuable get. Plus, the PAC 12 gets its footprints into Texas. Can't discount that. I'd be on the phone with Rice and see what they have to say. I wouldn't be waiting by the phone wondering what UNLV is going to say. Pick a lane and stay there.

I do disagree with your assessment. I think they knew it was a long shot but they wanted to make a play anyway and see if they could work it out. It didn’t work out, so now it’s plan B: stay primarily out west. I’ve also read rumors that they might offer UCONN for football only if they agree to regular home and home games with the pac in basketball. Don’t know how true that is but would be interesting. I think they get UNLV for sure. I also think Gonzaga will be added ultimately.

How bout the MW dissolve by UNLV and UTAH ST join and that way no MW schools pay any exit fees and you give Memphis and tulane 10 mill each and they pay 17 million. FedEx will chip in 5 for Memphis. That would work. It will boost the TV revenue regardless of who says what because it's in the central time zone.

The PAC12 just won. You pay your exit fees cuz we can find roughly equal valued teams who will. I suspect the PAC pays for Memphis this week and says no one else gets exit fee help. Why buy 4 when you can buy just 1? No one outside of Memphis is worth it. Once Memphis joins everyone else that they want will pay their own way ala Utah State.

The PAC will get to 12 and be the last to chew on the ACC. After the B1G, SEC, and BIG12 had had their share of the ACC what business man wants to touch that league? Who is going to give an unstable conference a good media deal? Are you all going to stick around on a prayer or bolt for a sure thing. The PAC learned this lesson the hard way. Did Oregon and Washington? Dominoes. 4 corners. Calford. Even OSU and Wazzu tried to get out. The ACC will not be in a position to invite anyone until after everyone else has eaten and they have those exit fees in hand. Meanwhile the PAC will have a media deal that I am certain will include clauses to increase revenue if they add ACC schools. There are 5 spots left and 1 belongs to Memphis. If you are a G5 school you better buy one while you still can.

You can join but they aren't paying your exit fees because they don't have to. Utah State just passed you up. You better get on the phone to your donors cuz the last of the PAC spots are filling up fast. If you don't wat to pay your exit fee there is an equal level G5 school available that will.

New Mexico has a larger population than Idaho and no one to root for. No NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, MLS. The PAC has to be considering grabbing that market. It isn't fantastic but it is the largest market that you could hope to "own" and it pushes you toward Texas.
