He's based off the japanese onomatopoeia Pakku-Pakku, which, once the character for it is rounded, gets you a little circle with a mouth, it was *after* his character design was finalized that members of the *japanese* company realized he looked like a pizza and a hockey puck, hence the yellow color, hence romanizing his name as "puckman" on the japanese cabinet instead of "packman", "Pakkuman", or as we'd come to know him here in the wast, Pac-Man

That's half true. Pac-Man's design is based on Kuchi, which is the Japanese word for mouth. The gamw was also supposed to be called Pakkuman in Japan, inspired by the Japanese onomatopoeia paku paku tarebu. The other initial Japanese name was Puck Man due to Pac-Man resembling a hockey puck but Namco feared that vandals in the United States would spray the letter F on the game's cabinets. Masaya Nakamura (the late founder of Namco) came up with the name Pac-Man since it was closer to the original Pakkuman name.
