Great video! That's too bad about the ice axe, I know those are expensive and custom made. I won't be there for a few weeks but will let you know if I see it!

Great summary, covered the specifics needed and made the point of need for iceaxe/whippet even when snow is not continuous. Spikes are great but if the snow gives way the iceaxe/whippet is what saves you. Look forward to more videos

Agree! Spikes aren’t so helpful when the snow is slushy.

Great vid, useful info. Ice-ax loop is tiny annoyance, until needed. Then it's worth the hefty price of a Suluk.

My trip is scheduled for July 15 heading southbound and this is super promising. There’s almost no snow already compared to the Sierras which is devastated. This was not my first choice to go southbound but it really really worked out in my favor. If I find your ice axe I’ll find you.

I hiked that section when I was a teenager in 1967, I plan to hike it again this July, before I get too old.

Great job. Sorry about the ice axe. Tether wrist strap to carabiner and attach as anchor to pack so even if your pack loop let go, the axe is still there. Well that trip may have made you nervous at times. Glad you are well. Beautiful country. Number two, very cool.

Thanks for your video, and congrats for likely being the second thru hiker southbound this year. :·) Given that Hart's Pass has been snow-free for several days already, I've figured my upcoming SOBO trip later in June will be snow free too. Probably your early start was even more scenic than what most of the rest of us will see. But no complaints! May your journey stay beautiful.

Wow! Thanks for the adrenal rush! I left a question over on Facebook, and thought I would come by here and ask a few more! I will be standing at Harts pass Road in 26 days, so I am very interested and curious. How many days of food total did you carry, and did you only camp at Woody Pass each way? And I presume you got off at Rainy Pass and back to Winthrop to post this video and resupply? And hopefully procure another ice axe and repair/replace trekking pole(s)? And yes, those were bear tracks! Thank you Eric, and safe journey!

I carried 7 days of food knowing that I could bail at multiple points from the terminus to Rainy pass. I camped at Woody pass northbound then dropped my gear at Hopkins lake and slack packed to the terminus. When you go, slack packing from Woody pass would probably be my choice. I got a fast hitch from Rainy to Winthrop to resupply. There’s a post office and Thriftway there. I replaced my trekking poles in Winthrop and ice axe in Mazama. Have a great hike!
